Replace the headlight dimmer switch (multi-function switch) on the steering column of a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson 2.5L I4 AWD.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes minimum before working near airbag components to allow SRS capacitor discharge
Improper handling of steering column components can damage airbag clock spring, requiring expensive replacement
Do not rotate steering wheel with steering column disconnected or clock spring alignment will be lost
ℹ️Record or photograph all connector orientations before disconnecting to ensure proper reassembly

Flashlight or work light

Parts

  • Dimmer/Turn Signal Multi-Function Switch × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  3. Turn steering wheel to center straight-ahead position
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
  5. Ensure steering wheel is centered and will not be rotated during procedure

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the two lower steering column cover screws on the underside of the column. Remove both screws using a Phillips screwdriver. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Remove the upper cover by releasing the retaining clips at the rear and lifting upward.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect airbag connector
Locate the yellow airbag connector on the steering column (typically on the driver's side). Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the yellow airbag connector. Position it safely out of the work area.
⚠️Ensure 3 minutes have elapsed since battery disconnect before touching airbag connectors
  3. 3
    Remove dimmer switch mounting screws
Locate the two mounting screws securing the dimmer/multi-function switch to the left side of the steering column. These are typically Phillips head screws. Remove both screws completely and retain for reinstallation.
  4. 4
    Disconnect switch electrical connectors
Identify the electrical connectors on the rear of the dimmer switch assembly (typically 2-3 connectors). Press the locking tabs on each connector while pulling straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and color coding of each connector for proper reassembly.
Do not pull on wires; press locking tabs and pull only on connector bodies
  5. 5
    Remove dimmer switch assembly
With screws and connectors removed, carefully slide the dimmer switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch should separate from the column shaft. If resistance is felt, verify all screws and connectors are fully removed before applying additional force.
  6. 6
    Install new dimmer switch
Position the new dimmer switch onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes and ensuring the switch actuator properly engages with the column mechanism. Verify the switch moves smoothly through all positions (high beam, low beam, flash-to-pass) before securing.
  7. 7
    Secure switch mounting screws
Install both mounting screws finger-tight, ensuring proper alignment. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern to avoid binding. Final torque is hand-tight plus 1/4 turn; over-tightening can crack the switch housing.
Do not over-tighten plastic switch housing screws or housing damage will occur
  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect all electrical connectors to the dimmer switch in their original positions, referencing photos or notes taken during disassembly. Ensure each connector clicks fully into place and locking tabs engage properly. Verify no wires are pinched or stressed.
  9. 9
    Reconnect airbag connector
Reconnect the yellow airbag connector to its original position on the steering column. Ensure the connector locks securely with an audible click. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover onto the column, ensuring all clips align properly. Press firmly until clips engage. Install the lower cover, aligning tabs at the front. Install both lower cover screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the battery terminal bolt to specification. Ensure clean connection with no corrosion.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Confirm steering wheel was not rotated during procedure to maintain clock spring alignment
  3. Check that all steering column covers are properly secured with no rattles

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify no airbag warning lights remain illuminated after 5-10 seconds
  • Test dimmer switch in all positions: low beam, high beam, and flash-to-pass function
  • Verify turn signals operate correctly in both left and right positions
  • Test that headlights respond properly to dimmer switch inputs
  • Ensure steering column covers are secure with no interference when turning steering wheel full lock to lock
