This procedure guides you through replacing the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with the 2.5L I4 engine, which monitors intake manifold pressure for engine management.

Warnings

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake

    Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod. Locate the MAP sensor on the driver's side of the intake manifold, typically positioned near or integrated with the throttle body assembly. The sensor will have an electrical connector and is secured by one or two small screws or bolts.

    Press the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and gently pull the connector away from the sensor. If the connector is tight, use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully release the locking tab while pulling. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

    Remove MAP Sensor Mounting Fasteners
    Using the 10mm socket and ratchet (or appropriate size based on your specific sensor mounting), remove the MAP sensor mounting screw(s). The sensor is typically held by 1-2 small screws. Keep these fasteners in a safe location as they may be reused if in good condition.

    Extract MAP Sensor
    Carefully pull the MAP sensor straight out from its mounting location in the intake manifold. If the sensor has an integrated vacuum port that inserts into the manifold, twist gently while pulling to break the seal. Inspect the sensor bore in the manifold for debris or damage.

    Clean Mounting Surface
    Use electrical contact cleaner and a clean lint-free cloth to clean the MAP sensor mounting surface on the intake manifold. Remove any old gasket material, dirt, or oil residue. Ensure the vacuum port (if applicable) is clear of debris. Allow the surface to dry completely before proceeding.

    Prepare New MAP Sensor
    Remove the new MAP sensor from its packaging. If the sensor includes a new O-ring or gasket, verify it is properly seated in the groove on the sensor body. Compare the new sensor to the old unit to confirm correct part match (connector orientation, mounting holes, and physical dimensions should match).

    Install New MAP Sensor
    Align the new MAP sensor with the mounting location on the intake manifold. If the sensor has a vacuum port tube, ensure it is properly aligned with the manifold opening. Gently press the sensor into position until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Do not force the sensor.

    Torque MAP Sensor Fasteners
    Install the MAP sensor mounting screw(s) and hand-tighten. Using a torque wrench, tighten the mounting screws to 3.0 Nm (2.0 lb-ft) in a crossing pattern if multiple screws are present. These fasteners are small and easy to over-torque, so use care and the proper torque setting.

    Reconnect Electrical Connector
    Push the electrical connector firmly onto the new MAP sensor until you hear or feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked in place and will not pull free.

    Reconnect Battery and Clear Codes
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal. If you have an OBD-II scanner, clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that may have been stored. If no scanner is available, the codes should clear after several drive cycles once the ECU verifies proper MAP sensor operation.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
  2. Verify no tools or parts have been left in the engine bay
  3. Confirm the MAP sensor is securely mounted and properly torqued

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it idles smoothly without stumbling or rough running
  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner - there should be no MAP sensor-related codes (P0105-P0109)
  • Perform a test drive and verify normal throttle response and acceleration with no hesitation
  • Monitor the MAP sensor reading with a scan tool at idle (should read approximately 28-32 kPa or 8-9 inHg at sea level) and under acceleration (should increase proportionally with throttle input)
  • Verify the check engine light remains off after several drive cycles
