Parts
- Shift linkage cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Cable bushings and grommets × 1 — Included with cable assembly or separate
- Linkage mounting clips × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Ensure transmission is in Park position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Remove center console trim panels to access shift lever assembly
Procedure
- 1Remove center console coverRemove the gear selector trim panel by carefully prying up from the rear edge. Disconnect any electrical connectors for switches or USB ports. Remove cover screws securing the upper console section and lift away to expose shift lever assembly.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect shift cable from selector leverLocate the shift cable attachment point on the shift lever assembly. Using a flathead screwdriver, pry the cable end off the selector lever ball stud. Note the orientation of the cable grommet in the bracket. Remove the cable retaining clip from the bracket by squeezing the locking tabs and pulling forward.ℹ️The cable end fitting uses a push-on design that may be stiff if never removed before
- 3Access transmission end of shift cableFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the shift cable where it connects to the transmission range selector lever on the driver's side of the transmission. The cable runs along the driver's side frame rail. Remove any cable routing clips or brackets securing the cable to the chassis or transmission.⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported before working underneath. Engine and transmission components may be hot if recently driven
- 4Disconnect cable from transmission leverVerify the transmission range selector lever is in Park position (fully rotated counterclockwise). Remove the cable end from the transmission lever ball stud using a flathead screwdriver. Remove the cable bracket mounting bolt from the transmission case and extract the cable grommet from the bracket.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 5Remove shift cable from vehiclePull the cable through any routing grommets in the firewall or floor pan. Trace the cable path from transmission to shifter, removing any remaining retaining clips. Carefully extract the cable assembly from the vehicle, noting the exact routing path through the cabin and undercarriage for reinstallation.ℹ️The cable passes through a rubber grommet in the floor pan that may require firm pulling to extract
- 6Inspect linkage componentsExamine the transmission range selector lever for wear, corrosion, or damage. Check pivot bolt condition and verify smooth lever movement through all gear positions. Inspect the shifter ball stud for wear or damage. Clean the transmission lever pivot area with wire brush if corrosion is present.Torque specPivot Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 7Install new shift cable at transmissionRoute the new cable assembly from the cabin through the floor grommet to the transmission. Install the cable grommet into the transmission mounting bracket ensuring it seats fully. Attach the bracket to the transmission case with the mounting bolt. Snap the cable end onto the transmission range selector lever ball stud, ensuring it locks in place with an audible click.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Route cable to shifter assemblyFollow the original cable routing path, securing the cable with all original clips and brackets along the frame rail and through the cabin. Ensure the cable has adequate slack and no sharp bends or pinch points. The cable should route smoothly without rubbing on sharp edges or heat sources.⚠Verify cable does not contact exhaust components, driveshaft, or suspension parts through full range of motion
- 9Connect cable to shift leverInsert the cable grommet into the shifter bracket and install the retaining clip. Snap the cable end onto the shift lever ball stud, ensuring positive engagement. Verify the cable sits properly in all retaining points without binding.
- 10Adjust shift linkageWith the transmission lever in Park position and the gear selector in Park, verify proper alignment. Check that the shift indicator aligns correctly with each gear position. The shift lever should move smoothly through all positions with consistent detent feel. If misalignment exists, adjust the cable at the transmission end by loosening the bracket bolt, repositioning, and retightening.⚠Improper adjustment will prevent starting in Park or Neutral, or allow starting in other gearsTorque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall console componentsReconnect any electrical connectors for console switches and accessories. Install the upper console section and secure with cover screws. Snap the gear selector trim panel back into place, ensuring all clips engage properly.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Reconnect negative battery terminal
- Verify all console trim panels are properly seated and secured
- Confirm all cable routing clips are installed to prevent rattles
Verification
- With engine off, move shift lever through all gear positions verifying smooth operation and proper detent feel in each position
- Verify shift position indicator correctly displays P, R, N, D, and manual mode positions
- Start engine in Park position, verify engine starts normally
- With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions confirming transmission engages each gear properly
- Verify Park pawl engagement by attempting to roll vehicle in Park on an incline with engine off
- Confirm vehicle only starts in Park and Neutral positions, not in Drive or Reverse
- Test drive vehicle to verify all forward gears and reverse operate correctly
