Replace the transmission range sensor (inhibitor switch) on a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson 2.5L AWD to restore proper gear position detection and shift interlock function.
Warnings
⚠Park on level ground and use wheel chocks. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged before raising vehicle.
⚠Transmission fluid may be hot if vehicle was recently operated. Allow minimum 30 minutes cooling time.
ℹ️Improper range sensor installation or alignment will cause starting issues and incorrect gear display.

Parts
- Transmission Range Sensor (Inhibitor Switch) × 1 — Hyundai OEM 42700-3B200 or equivalent
- Transmission Range Sensor O-ring/Gasket × 1 — Usually included with sensor
Fluids
- Hyundai SP-IV-M ATF — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
- Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands
- Remove engine undercover panels for transmission access
Procedure
- 1Locate transmission range sensorFrom underneath vehicle, locate the transmission range sensor on the driver's side of the transmission case, near the manual control shaft. The sensor is mounted vertically with an electrical connector on top and is located above the transmission pan.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the range sensor electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Move the wiring harness aside to provide clearance for sensor removal.
- 3Position drain panPlace drain pan directly beneath the transmission range sensor. Expect approximately 0.5-1.0 quart of ATF to drain when sensor is removed. The sensor is located above the fluid level but some spillage will occur.
- 4Remove sensor mounting boltsRemove the two 10mm mounting bolts securing the transmission range sensor to the transmission case. Support the sensor as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from dropping.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 5Remove old sensorCarefully pull the transmission range sensor straight out from the transmission case. The sensor shaft engages with the manual control shaft inside the transmission. Note the orientation of the sensor and the position of the alignment features before complete removal.
- 6Inspect and clean mounting surfaceRemove the old O-ring or gasket from the sensor mounting bore in the transmission case. Clean the mounting surface with a lint-free rag. Inspect for damage, cracks, or metal debris. Check that the manual control shaft inside the bore rotates smoothly.⚠Do not allow debris to enter the transmission case opening. Cover with clean rag if installation is delayed.
- 7Prepare new sensorInstall the new O-ring or gasket onto the new transmission range sensor. Lightly coat the O-ring with clean Hyundai SP-IV-M ATF to aid installation and prevent damage. Verify the sensor alignment pin or flat surface matches the old unit.
- 8Install new sensorAlign the transmission range sensor shaft with the manual control shaft inside the transmission. The sensor will only fit in one orientation due to the alignment features. Push the sensor straight into the bore until it seats flush against the transmission case mounting surface. Ensure proper engagement by gently rotating the sensor - it should not spin freely.⚠Do not force the sensor. If it does not seat easily, remove and verify shaft alignment. Forcing can damage internal components.
- 9Install mounting boltsInstall the two sensor mounting bolts and hand-tighten. Ensure the sensor remains fully seated against the transmission case. Torque bolts to specification in a criss-cross pattern to ensure even seating.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the transmission range sensor. Ensure the connector locks securely with an audible click. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged.
- 11Check and refill transmission fluidWith vehicle still raised and level, remove the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case. Add Hyundai SP-IV-M ATF through the fill hole using a fluid transfer pump until fluid begins to drip from the fill hole. Reinstall fill plug. Check transmission dipstick if equipped and verify proper level per owner's manual procedure.
- 12Reinstall undercovers and lower vehicleReinstall all engine undercover panels removed during preparation. Lower vehicle from jack stands. Reconnect negative battery cable.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify transmission fluid level is correct using proper warm-up procedure
- Double-check that all undercover panels are securely fastened
Verification
- Start engine with foot firmly on brake pedal - engine should start in Park or Neutral only
- Verify gear position indicator on instrument cluster matches shift lever position in all gear positions (P, R, N, D)
- Test that shift lever cannot be moved out of Park without pressing brake pedal
- Check for transmission fluid leaks around range sensor after engine reaches operating temperature
- Perform test drive and verify smooth shifting through all gears with no warning lights
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify no transmission range sensor codes are present
