HVAC Control Panel

This procedure covers removal and installation of the HVAC control panel assembly in the center console of a 2016-2024 Hyundai Tucson with 2.5L I4 engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
3. Allow interior components to cool if vehicle was recently operated with climate control
4. Ensure shift lever is in Park position for adequate working space

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower center console trim panel
   Using plastic trim removal tools, carefully pry the lower center console trim panel starting from the bottom rear edge near the cupholders. Work around the perimeter to release all retaining clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for the USB ports or 12V outlet if equipped. Remove the panel completely.

   Remove climate control bezel
   Locate and remove the Phillips screws securing the climate control bezel (typically 2-4 screws depending on trim level). These are usually located below the HVAC control panel or behind the lower trim panel. Gently pull the bezel forward to release any remaining clips.
   Torque spec

   Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)

   Access HVAC panel mounting fasteners
   With the bezel removed, you will now have access to the HVAC control panel mounting screws or bolts. Identify all fasteners securing the control panel to the dash framework. Typically there are 4 mounting points (two upper, two lower).

   Remove HVAC panel mounting fasteners
   Using a 10mm socket, remove all mounting bolts securing the HVAC control panel assembly to the dash structure. Keep these fasteners organized as they will be reused during installation.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Carefully pull the HVAC control panel forward approximately 2-3 inches. Locate the main electrical connector(s) on the rear of the unit. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector(s). Note the orientation and routing of the wiring harness for proper reinstallation.
   ⚠Do not pull excessively on the panel before disconnecting electrical connectors as this can damage the wiring harness

   Remove HVAC control panel
   With all electrical connections disconnected, remove the HVAC control panel assembly from the dash opening. Inspect the mounting points and surrounding trim for any damage.

   Install new HVAC control panel
   Position the new or replacement HVAC control panel near the dash opening. Connect all electrical connectors to the rear of the unit, ensuring they click securely into place. Verify proper engagement of the locking tabs.

   Secure HVAC panel to dash
   Carefully align the HVAC control panel into the dash opening, ensuring it sits flush with the surrounding trim. Install all mounting bolts and tighten using a 10mm socket to the specified torque value.

   Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)

   Reinstall climate control bezel
   Position the climate control bezel over the HVAC panel and press firmly to engage any retaining clips. Install the Phillips screws and tighten to the specified torque value. Ensure the bezel sits flush with no gaps.

    Reinstall lower center console trim
    Reconnect any electrical connectors for USB ports or 12V outlets. Align the lower center console trim panel with its mounting position and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Verify all clips are fully seated.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal
2. Start the vehicle and allow the HVAC system to initialize (may take 30-60 seconds)
3. Verify all trim panels are secure with no rattles or gaps
4. Check that all USB ports and 12V outlets function properly if equipped

Verification

• Turn the ignition to ON position and verify the HVAC control panel illuminates
• Test all climate control functions: fan speed, temperature control, mode selection, and recirculation
• Test both automatic and manual climate control modes if equipped with dual-zone system
• Verify AC compressor engages when AC button is pressed (listen for engagement click)
• Check that air flows from correct vents when mode is changed (defrost, floor, dash, etc.)
• Confirm heated seat controls function if integrated into the HVAC panel
• Test rear climate controls if vehicle is equipped with rear HVAC
• Verify no error messages or warning lights appear on the instrument cluster
