This procedure covers the removal and replacement of both headlight assemblies on a 2012-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK with the 3.6L V6 engine.
Warnings
⚠Halogen bulbs contain pressurized gas and can shatter if dropped or struck. Handle assemblies carefully.
⚠Allow headlights to cool completely before removal if vehicle was recently operated.
ℹ️Headlight assemblies are fragile. Avoid placing assemblies lens-down on hard surfaces.

Parts
- Driver side headlight assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Passenger side headlight assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Allow headlights to cool if vehicle was recently driven
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the battery negative terminal bolt and remove the cable from the battery post. Secure the cable away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 2Access driver side headlight assemblyLocate the headlight assembly mounting ring. The Wrangler JK uses a four-point mounting system with a retaining ring visible from the front of the vehicle. No grille removal is required for this model.
- 3Remove driver side headlight retaining ringUsing a T15 Torx driver, remove the four retaining ring screws located around the perimeter of the headlight assembly. Remove the retaining ring and set aside. These screws secure the headlight to the mounting bracket.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect driver side headlight connectorsCarefully pull the headlight assembly forward approximately 2-3 inches to access the rear connectors. Disconnect the main headlight connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back. If equipped with daytime running lights, disconnect the secondary connector in the same manner.
- 5Remove driver side headlight assemblyWith all connectors disconnected, carefully remove the headlight assembly from the vehicle. Avoid hitting the lens against the body panels. Place the assembly on a padded surface with the lens facing up.
- 6Install new driver side headlight assemblyPosition the new headlight assembly near the mounting location. Reconnect the main headlight connector and secondary DRL connector (if equipped) by pushing firmly until the locking tabs click into place. Carefully guide the assembly into the mounting bracket, ensuring alignment tabs are properly seated.
- 7Secure driver side headlight retaining ringPosition the retaining ring over the headlight assembly, aligning all four screw holes. Install the four T15 Torx screws in a cross pattern (top, bottom, left, right) to ensure even pressure. Torque screws to specification.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 8Remove passenger side headlight retaining ringMove to the passenger side of the vehicle. Using a T15 Torx driver, remove the four retaining ring screws located around the perimeter of the headlight assembly. Remove the retaining ring and set aside.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 9Disconnect passenger side headlight connectorsPull the headlight assembly forward approximately 2-3 inches to access the rear connectors. Disconnect the main headlight connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back. Disconnect the secondary DRL connector if equipped.
- 10Remove passenger side headlight assemblyWith all connectors disconnected, carefully remove the headlight assembly from the vehicle. Avoid hitting the lens against the body panels. Place the assembly on a padded surface with the lens facing up.
- 11Install new passenger side headlight assemblyPosition the new headlight assembly near the mounting location. Reconnect the main headlight connector and secondary DRL connector (if equipped) by pushing firmly until the locking tabs click. Guide the assembly into the mounting bracket, ensuring proper alignment.

Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Ensure retaining rings are flush against headlight bezels with no gaps
- Confirm headlight assemblies are securely mounted with no movement
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and verify daytime running lights illuminate (if equipped)
- Turn on headlights and verify both low beam and high beam function properly on both sides
- Activate turn signals and verify front turn signal indicators function correctly
- Check headlight aim and adjust if necessary using the adjustment screws on the rear of the assembly
- Inspect for proper seating of assemblies with no gaps between housing and body panels
