Parts
- Window regulator and motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or Mopar 68059770AC (driver) / 68059771AC (passenger)
- Door panel clips × 10 — Mopar 6503598AA or equivalent
- Vapor barrier (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Roll window to full up position before beginning work
- Remove door panel Torx screws from door pull handle and armrest area
- Disconnect door handle cable and all electrical connectors from door panel switches
Procedure
- 1Remove door panelUsing panel removal tools, carefully pry door panel clips free starting from bottom rear corner and working around perimeter. Lift door panel upward to disengage from window sill, then remove completely from door. Set aside on protected surface.
- 2Remove vapor barrierCarefully peel back or remove the plastic vapor barrier from inner door shell. If removing completely, work slowly to avoid tearing. On JK models, the barrier is typically held by butyl adhesive and can be repositioned if not damaged.
- 3Support and secure window glassWith window in full up position, use masking tape to secure glass to door frame from outside. Alternatively, have an assistant hold window glass in raised position. This prevents glass from dropping when regulator is disconnected.⚠Window glass will drop if not properly supported when regulator bolts are removed
- 4Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside door cavity. Press release tab and disconnect connector from motor. Note routing of wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 5Remove window glass from regulatorLocate the two 10mm bolts securing window glass to regulator rail through access holes in inner door frame. Remove both bolts while supporting glass. Carefully lift window glass upward and out of door frame, or secure in full up position clear of regulator mechanism.
- 6Remove regulator mounting boltsLocate all regulator assembly mounting bolts (typically 6-8 bolts on JK Wrangler). Use 10mm or 13mm socket to remove bracket bolts securing regulator mechanism and motor assembly to inner door shell. Track bolt locations as some may be different lengths.Torque specBracket Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 7Remove regulator and motor assemblyCarefully maneuver regulator and motor assembly through large access opening in inner door frame. The assembly may need to be tilted and rotated to clear door structure. Remove completely from door and inspect mounting points for damage or corrosion.
- 8Prepare new regulator assemblyUnpack new regulator and motor assembly. Verify it matches original configuration. If regulator cables are tied together for shipping, do not remove ties until assembly is installed and motor connector is attached - this keeps mechanism synchronized.
- 9Install new regulator assemblyPosition new regulator and motor assembly into door cavity, maneuvering through access opening. Align regulator rail in vertical position and position motor mounting bracket to align with mounting holes in inner door shell.
- 10Install regulator mounting boltsInstall all regulator bracket bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque bracket bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even mounting pressure and proper regulator alignment.Torque specBracket Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 11Connect window motor and test operationConnect electrical connector to window motor. Reconnect negative battery cable temporarily. Test window motor operation through full travel before installing glass. Motor should operate smoothly without binding. Remove any shipping ties from regulator cables after confirming operation. Disconnect battery again before proceeding.ℹ️If regulator binds or operates roughly, recheck mounting bolt alignment before proceedingTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Install window glassLower regulator to mid-position using manual override or brief power connection. Insert window glass into door frame and align glass mounting holes with regulator rail attachment points. Install two 10mm bolts finger-tight through access holes.
- 13Adjust and secure windowReconnect battery temporarily and cycle window up and down multiple times. Adjust glass tilt and position as needed for proper fit in door frame and weatherstripping. When alignment is correct, tighten glass mounting bolts securely. Verify window seals properly at top of frame and operates smoothly.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 14Reinstall vapor barrier and door panelReposition vapor barrier ensuring complete coverage and good adhesion around edges. Route all electrical connectors through door panel openings. Align door panel on door frame and engage window sill clips first, then press panel firmly around perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reconnect all electrical switches and door handle cable. Install door panel Torx screws and torque to specification.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated before testing
- Verify vapor barrier is properly sealed to prevent water intrusion into door cavity
- Reconnect negative battery cable and torque to specification
- Reset any power window auto-up/down functions per manufacturer procedure if applicable
Verification
- Test window operation through complete up and down travel multiple times - movement should be smooth without hesitation or binding
- Verify window seats properly in weatherstripping at full up position with no gaps
- Check that window glass is flush with door frame and aligned with rear quarter glass when up
- Test all door panel switches and controls for proper function
- Inspect door panel for secure mounting with no rattles or loose clips
- Verify no unusual motor noise or grinding sounds during operation
