Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers the diagnosis, removal, and replacement of the backup camera on a 2017 Maserati Levante, including liftgate trim removal, camera connector access, and system calibration verification.

Warnings

Always disconnect battery before working on electrical components to prevent airbag deployment and module damage.
ℹ️The backup camera system requires software calibration after replacement using Maserati diagnostic equipment.
Do not force trim clips; Maserati trim clips are fragile and expensive to replace.

Parts

  • Backup camera assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Camera sealing gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Liftgate trim panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure liftgate is clean and dry around camera area
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
  4. Open liftgate and secure in fully open position
  5. Mark camera orientation with masking tape before removal if reusing camera

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the terminal from the battery post and secure away from battery to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait 3 minutes for all vehicle systems to fully discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove liftgate lower trim panel
Starting at the bottom corners, use trim panel removal tools to carefully release the liftgate lower trim panel clips. Work slowly around the perimeter, identifying and releasing approximately 8-10 clips. Once all clips are released, carefully pull the panel away from the liftgate, being mindful of any electrical connectors behind the panel. Disconnect the liftgate release handle connector if present.
  3. 3
    Access camera mounting area
With the lower trim panel removed, locate the backup camera mounting location at the center of the liftgate handle area. Identify the camera wiring harness routing through the liftgate structure. Remove any protective covers or clips securing the harness to the liftgate frame to provide slack for camera removal.
  4. 4
    Disconnect camera electrical connector
Locate the camera connector approximately 12 inches behind the camera mounting location. Press the connector locking tab and carefully pull the connector apart. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. If corrosion is present, clean with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry completely before proceeding.
  5. 5
    Remove camera mounting fasteners
From the exterior of the liftgate, use a T25 Torx driver to remove the two camera mounting screws. These screws are typically located on either side of the camera lens. Support the camera from behind as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.
Camera assembly may fall when final screw is removed; support from interior side.

  6. 6
    Remove backup camera assembly
Carefully pull the camera assembly from the exterior side of the liftgate. Guide the wiring connector through the opening from the interior side. Remove and inspect the sealing gasket around the camera mounting hole. If the gasket is damaged, torn, or compressed, it must be replaced to prevent water intrusion.
  7. 7
    Prepare new camera installation
Clean the camera mounting surface on the liftgate thoroughly, removing any dirt, old adhesive, or corrosion. Ensure the mounting hole is free of debris. Install the new sealing gasket onto the replacement camera assembly, ensuring it seats properly in the camera housing groove. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the camera connector pins to prevent corrosion.
  8. 8
    Install new backup camera
From the exterior, carefully insert the new camera assembly into the mounting hole, feeding the connector through from the exterior to interior. Ensure the sealing gasket seats properly against the liftgate surface. Align the camera so the lens is oriented correctly (typically with the Maserati logo or part number at the top). Hand-start both mounting screws before tightening.
  9. 9
    Secure camera mounting screws
Using a torque wrench with T25 Torx bit, tighten the camera mounting screws in a cross pattern to ensure even sealing gasket compression. Verify the camera is seated flush against the liftgate surface with no gaps visible around the gasket.

  10. 10
    Reconnect camera electrical connector
Connect the camera electrical connector, ensuring it locks with an audible click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated. Route the wiring harness back through the liftgate structure using the original clips and routing path to prevent chafing or pinching.
  11. 11
    Reinstall liftgate trim panel
Reconnect any electrical connectors for the liftgate release handle. Align the trim panel with the liftgate structure and press firmly around all clip locations to secure. Verify all clips are fully engaged and the panel sits flush with no gaps.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this may damage the battery post or terminal. After reconnection, the vehicle may require window and sunroof initialization procedures per manufacturer specifications.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Configure and calibrate camera system
Connect Maserati diagnostic scanner (MDS) to the vehicle OBD-II port. Navigate to the camera/parking system module and perform the camera replacement configuration procedure. This typically includes camera identification, aiming adjustment, and dynamic guideline calibration. Follow all on-screen prompts to complete the configuration process. Clear any fault codes related to the backup camera system.
ℹ️Camera calibration must be performed with vehicle on level surface and liftgate fully closed.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no loose clips or rattles
  2. Test liftgate operation to ensure no interference with camera or wiring
  3. Verify camera lens is clean and free of fingerprints or debris

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and shift transmission to REVERSE to activate backup camera display
  • Verify camera image appears on infotainment screen with no distortion or error messages
  • Confirm dynamic parking guidelines appear and move appropriately when steering wheel is turned
  • Check for proper camera coverage with no blind spots or image obstructions
  • Verify camera image clarity in various lighting conditions (bright sunlight, shade)
  • Test that camera automatically activates when shifting to reverse and deactivates when shifting to other gears
  • Inspect camera mounting area from exterior for proper sealing and water-tight installation
  • Perform test drive with several reverse maneuvers to confirm consistent system operation
