Remove and replace the harmonic balancer (crankshaft damper) on the 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine, which requires serpentine belt removal and careful extraction/installation to prevent crankshaft seal damage.

Warnings

⚠️The harmonic balancer bolt is torque-to-yield (TTY) and must be replaced with a new bolt. Reusing old bolt can result in catastrophic engine damage if bolt fails.
Improper removal using pry bars or hammers will damage the crankshaft snout threads and keyway. Always use a proper harmonic balancer puller.
Do not strike the harmonic balancer directly during installation. This can damage the crankshaft thrust bearings and cause premature engine failure.
Verify crankshaft pulley/balancer timing marks and key alignment before installation. Incorrect installation can cause engine vibration and damage.
ℹ️The 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo harmonic balancer is a critical vibration damper. Only use OEM or equivalent quality parts; aftermarket failures are common and can destroy the engine.

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold before beginning work
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure cable away from battery post
  3. Raise vehicle and secure on jack stands at manufacturer-specified lift points
  4. Remove front engine splash shields and lower covers for access to crankshaft pulley area
  5. Position drain pan below front of engine to catch any coolant or oil drips
  6. Take photos of serpentine belt routing before removal for reference
  7. Document crankshaft pulley/balancer orientation and any timing marks with photos

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove serpentine belt and tensioner
Using serpentine belt tool or appropriate wrench, rotate belt tensioner clockwise to release tension and remove serpentine belt. Note belt routing for reinstallation. If tensioner is in the way of harmonic balancer removal, remove tensioner mounting bolts and set aside.

  2. 2
Remove engine covers and accessories if needed
Remove any engine covers or trim pieces blocking access to front of crankshaft. On some configurations, the coolant reservoir or other components may need to be repositioned. Disconnect electrical connectors as needed and secure wiring harnesses out of work area.
    Torque spec
    Electrical Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
    Cover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Lock crankshaft rotation
Prevent crankshaft from rotating by using flywheel holding tool through bell housing access port, or use strap wrench on harmonic balancer itself. Ensure locking method is secure before attempting to loosen crankshaft bolt. Do NOT use starter motor to hold crankshaft.
If using strap wrench on balancer, apply only enough pressure to prevent rotation. Excessive force can crack rubber damper section.
  4. 4
    Remove harmonic balancer center bolt
Using breaker bar or impact wrench with appropriate socket, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt (clockwise threads, loosen counterclockwise). This bolt is extremely tight at 180 Nm (133 lb-ft) and may require impact wrench. Once loosened, remove bolt completely and set aside for disposal - this is a TTY bolt and must not be reused.
⚠️Do not reuse the harmonic balancer bolt - it is torque-to-yield and will fail if reused, potentially causing severe engine damage.

  5. 5
    Install harmonic balancer puller
Thread harmonic balancer puller bolts into the threaded holes on face of harmonic balancer. Do NOT use puller that pulls from outer edge only - must use proper three-bolt puller that threads into balancer face. Ensure puller center bolt contacts crankshaft snout center squarely. Verify crankshaft key is visible in keyway slot.
Never use jaw-type pullers on outer edge of harmonic balancer. This will damage the damper and require replacement of a good part.
  6. 6
    Remove harmonic balancer from crankshaft
Gradually tighten center bolt of puller tool while ensuring balancer pulls off evenly. Apply steady pressure - do not hammer or shock load. Balancer should slide off crankshaft snout. Once removed, inspect crankshaft snout for scoring, burrs, or damage. Inspect crankshaft key for wear or damage - replace if necessary. Check front crankshaft seal for oil leakage.
ℹ️If balancer is extremely tight, apply penetrating oil around hub area and allow to soak 15-20 minutes before applying puller pressure.
  7. 7
    Inspect and prepare crankshaft snout
Clean crankshaft snout thoroughly with wire brush and degreaser. Remove any rust, debris, or old rubber material. Inspect crankshaft threads in center - if damaged, they must be repaired before proceeding. Verify crankshaft key is properly seated and not damaged. Wipe crankshaft seal area clean and inspect seal for leakage or damage - replace seal now if needed.
Any burrs or debris on crankshaft snout will prevent proper harmonic balancer seating and cause runout/vibration issues.
  8. 8
    Prepare new harmonic balancer
Unpack new harmonic balancer and verify correct part number for 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine. Inspect balancer keyway slot for proper machining and cleanliness. Apply thin film of clean engine oil to inside diameter of balancer hub (crankshaft contact surface only - not rubber section). Verify timing marks or reference notches are present and clear.
ℹ️Do not apply oil or lubricant to outer rubber damper section or front seal contact area of balancer.
  9. 9
    Install new harmonic balancer
Align harmonic balancer keyway with crankshaft key. Carefully slide balancer onto crankshaft snout by hand as far as possible, ensuring key engages properly. Using harmonic balancer installation tool (large socket or dedicated installer), carefully drive balancer onto crankshaft until fully seated and flush with crankshaft shoulder. Never hammer directly on balancer - use installation tool to distribute force.
⚠️Direct hammering on harmonic balancer will damage crankshaft thrust bearings. Always use proper installation tool to press balancer into position.
  10. 10
    Install new harmonic balancer bolt
Apply medium-strength thread locker to threads of NEW harmonic balancer bolt (TTY bolt - never reuse old bolt). Start bolt by hand and thread in several turns to ensure proper thread engagement. Lock crankshaft rotation using same method as removal (flywheel holder or strap wrench). Using torque wrench, tighten harmonic balancer bolt to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft). Consult service manual for any additional angle torque specifications required.
⚠️Verify you are using a NEW torque-to-yield bolt. Using old bolt will result in insufficient clamping force and potential bolt failure during operation.
ℹ️Some specifications require additional angle torque after initial torque value - verify with factory service manual for exact procedure.

    Verify harmonic balancer installation
Remove crankshaft locking tool. Manually rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions by hand using socket on harmonic balancer bolt. Verify smooth rotation with no binding or unusual resistance. If available, use dial indicator to check harmonic balancer runout - should be less than 0.05mm (0.002 inch) total runout. Visually verify balancer is seated flush against crankshaft shoulder with no gaps.
Any binding during crankshaft rotation indicates improper installation. Do not proceed - remove and reinstall balancer correctly.
  12. 12
    Reinstall belt tensioner and accessories
If removed, reinstall belt tensioner and any other accessories removed for access. Torque all mounting bolts to specification. Reconnect any electrical connectors that were disconnected during disassembly. Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked.
    Torque spec

    Electrical Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  13. 13
    Install serpentine belt
Route new or inspected serpentine belt according to belt routing diagram (reference photos taken during disassembly). Rotate belt tensioner to release position and seat belt onto all pulleys. Release tensioner to apply proper belt tension. Verify belt is properly seated in all pulley grooves with no twists or misalignment.
ℹ️Double-check belt routing matches factory diagram. Incorrect routing can cause belt failure and accessory damage.
  14. 14
    Reinstall covers and lower vehicle
Reinstall all engine covers, splash shields, and lower panels removed for access. Torque all fasteners to specification. Reconnect negative battery terminal. Lower vehicle from jack stands.
    Torque spec
    Cover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all tools and parts are removed from engine compartment before starting engine
  2. Verify serpentine belt routing is correct and belt is properly tensioned
  3. Check that all electrical connections are secure and properly seated
  4. Confirm harmonic balancer bolt was torqued to specification with NEW TTY bolt

Verification

  • Start engine and listen for unusual vibrations, knocking, or rattling from front of engine - should run smoothly
  • Observe serpentine belt operation for 30 seconds - should track properly on all pulleys without slipping or jumping
  • Check for any oil leaks from front crankshaft seal area after engine reaches operating temperature
  • Verify all accessories driven by serpentine belt are functioning properly (alternator charging, A/C compressor engaging, etc.)
  • Road test vehicle and monitor for any unusual vibrations at various RPM ranges - harmonic balancer should eliminate normal crankshaft vibrations
  • After 50-100 miles of operation, visually inspect harmonic balancer bolt for any loosening or movement (should remain tight)
