Replace both headlight bulbs on a 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo by accessing the bulb assemblies from inside the engine bay and removing the dust covers and retaining clips.

Warnings

⚠️HID bulbs operate at high voltage (up to 25,000V). Allow at least 5 minutes after turning off ignition before accessing bulbs to allow capacitor discharge.
Never touch bulb glass with bare hands. Oils from skin will cause premature bulb failure and hot spots. Always use clean nitrile gloves.
HID bulbs contain mercury. Handle carefully and dispose according to local hazardous waste regulations.
ℹ️This vehicle uses D5S HID bulbs, not halogen. Verify correct bulb type before starting procedure.

Parts

  • D5S Xenon HID bulb (driver side) × 1 — Use OEM specification - D5S 25W
  • D5S Xenon HID bulb (passenger side) × 1 — Use OEM specification - D5S 25W

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Allow engine to cool for at least 15 minutes if recently driven
  3. Wait minimum 5 minutes after engine off to allow HID system capacitors to fully discharge
  4. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  5. Put on clean nitrile gloves to prevent oil contamination of new bulbs

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access driver side headlight assembly
Locate the driver side headlight assembly from behind in the engine bay. You may need to move aside wiring harnesses or air ducting for better access. The bulb access cover is a round dust cap on the rear of the headlight housing.
  2. 2
    Remove driver side dust cover
Rotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise approximately one-quarter turn and pull it straight out from the rear of the headlight assembly. Set aside in a clean location.
  3. 3
    Disconnect driver side bulb connector
Locate the electrical connector attached to the base of the D5S bulb. Press the release tab and pull the connector straight off the bulb base. Do not twist or bend excessively.
  4. 4
Remove driver side bulb retaining clip
The D5S bulb is held by a wire spring clip. Press down on the clip and unhook it from the retaining notch, then swing the clip out of the way. Do not remove the clip completely from the housing.
  5. 5
    Extract driver side bulb
Carefully pull the D5S bulb straight out from the headlight reflector housing. Avoid touching the reflector surface inside the housing. Inspect the old bulb for any signs of damage or moisture contamination.
  6. 6
    Install new driver side bulb
Remove new D5S bulb from packaging while wearing clean gloves. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the headlight housing and insert straight in until it seats fully. Ensure the bulb base is flush against the housing.
Verify bulb orientation - the tabs must align correctly or bulb will not seat properly and beam pattern will be incorrect.
  7. 7
    Secure driver side retaining clip
Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base and press it down into the locked position in the retaining notch. Verify the clip is fully engaged and holding the bulb securely.
  8. 8
    Reconnect driver side electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the bulb base until it clicks into place. Tug gently to verify it is locked on. Route the wiring to avoid pinching.
  9. 9
    Reinstall driver side dust cover
Align the tabs on the dust cover with the slots on the headlight housing. Push it in and rotate clockwise one-quarter turn until it locks in place. Ensure the seal is properly seated to prevent moisture ingress.
  10. 10
    Replace passenger side headlight bulb
Repeat steps 1 through 9 for the passenger side headlight assembly. Access may be slightly easier on the passenger side due to less underhood equipment. Follow the same procedure: remove dust cover, disconnect connector, release retaining clip, remove old bulb, install new bulb with gloves, secure clip, reconnect connector, and reinstall dust cover.

Reassembly

  1. Verify both dust covers are properly seated and locked to prevent moisture entry
  2. Ensure all wiring harnesses and air ducting moved during access are returned to original positions
  3. Close hood securely

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start) and activate headlights
  • Verify both low beam headlights illuminate properly with no flickering or error messages on dashboard
  • Test high beam function on both sides
  • Check that headlight beam pattern appears correct and symmetrical on a wall or garage door from 25 feet away
  • If HID bulb warning light appears on dashboard, turn off ignition, wait 30 seconds, and restart - light should clear after bulb initialization
  • Verify no light leaks around dust covers indicating improper sealing
