Horn

Replace or repair the horn assembly on a 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo, including removal of the front bumper cover for access and electrical testing.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
3. Open hood and secure in fully open position
4. Place protective covers on fenders to prevent scratches during bumper removal
5. Document horn connector orientation with photo before disconnection

Procedure

   Disconnect battery negative terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the terminal and secure away from battery post. Wait minimum 2 minutes before proceeding.
   Torque spec

   Battery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)

   Remove front wheel well liner fasteners
   Turn steering wheel full lock to access front driver side wheel well. Remove plastic push clips and fasteners securing the front portion of the wheel well liner to expose bumper mounting points. Fold liner back to access bumper mounting bolts.

   Remove front bumper cover mounting bolts
   Remove the lower bumper cover screws using an 8mm socket. Remove upper mounting bolts behind grille using 10mm socket. Disconnect fog light connectors if equipped. With assistance, carefully pull bumper cover forward from fender mounting clips and remove from vehicle.
   ℹ️Bumper cover clips can break easily; pull evenly and gently from both sides

   Locate and access horn assembly
   Horn is mounted on driver side frame rail behind bumper cover. Identify the horn unit with its electrical connector and mounting bracket. Note routing of wiring harness for reinstallation.

   Test horn circuit before removal
   Using multimeter, verify voltage at horn connector (approximately 12V when horn button pressed). If no voltage present, diagnose wiring harness or steering wheel clock spring before replacing horn. If voltage present but horn inoperative, proceed with horn replacement.

   Disconnect horn electrical connector
   Press release tab on horn electrical connector and pull connector straight off horn terminal. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Clean terminals with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Remove horn mounting bolt and bracket
   Using 13mm socket, remove horn mounting bolt securing horn to bracket on frame rail. Remove horn from vehicle. If bracket is damaged or corroded, remove bracket mounting bolts and replace bracket.

   Prepare new horn for installation
   Verify new horn matches original configuration and mounting pattern. Check that horn terminal is clean and free from corrosion. Test new horn function with direct 12V connection if bench testing equipment available.

   Install new horn assembly
   Position new horn on mounting bracket aligned with frame rail. Install horn mounting bolt and torque to specification. Ensure horn is securely mounted without excessive play.

    Reconnect horn electrical connector
    Connect electrical connector to horn terminal until release tab clicks into locked position. Gently tug connector to verify secure connection. Ensure wiring harness is routed away from sharp edges and heat sources.

    Reinstall front bumper cover
    With assistance, align bumper cover with fender mounting clips and guide into position. Ensure all clips engage properly. Install upper mounting bolts and lower cover screws. Reconnect fog light connectors if equipped. Torque all fasteners to specification.

    Reinstall wheel well liner and reconnect battery
    Secure wheel well liner with all original fasteners and push clips. Clean battery terminal and cable contact surfaces. Reconnect negative battery cable and torque terminal bolt to specification.

Reassembly

1. Verify all bumper cover fasteners are properly tightened and panel gaps are even
2. Ensure wheel well liner is fully secured to prevent wind noise or water intrusion
3. Confirm no tools or parts are left in engine compartment before closing hood

Verification

• Test horn function by pressing horn button on steering wheel - horn should sound immediately with consistent tone
• Verify no warning lights illuminated on instrument cluster after battery reconnection
• Visually inspect bumper cover alignment and verify all mounting points are secure
• Check that horn sounds at appropriate volume without rattling or weak tone
• Test horn multiple times in quick succession to ensure relay and circuit function properly
