Replacement of a single ignition coil on the 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine, including spark plug service.

Warnings

Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to prevent burns from hot components
Disconnect battery negative terminal to prevent accidental ignition system activation during service
ℹ️The V6 engine has coils mounted directly over spark plugs; dropping debris into cylinder can cause engine damage

Parts

  • Ignition coil × 1 — Use OEM Maserati specification
  • Spark plug × 1 — NGK or Champion as per Maserati spec

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to touch
  2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 5 minutes
  3. Open the hood and locate the engine cover
  4. Identify which cylinder requires the ignition coil replacement (cylinders 1-3 right bank, 4-6 left bank)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover
Remove the decorative engine cover by releasing the mounting points. The cover typically uses quarter-turn fasteners or pull-up clips. Lift the cover straight up once all fasteners are released.
  2. 2
    Disconnect ignition coil electrical connector
Locate the ignition coil on the affected cylinder. Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect the wiring harness from the coil. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
  3. 3
    Remove ignition coil mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the ignition coil to the valve cover. Keep the bolt in a safe location for reinstallation.

    Ignition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Extract ignition coil
Grasp the ignition coil firmly and pull straight up with a twisting motion to break the seal. The coil sits deep into the valve cover bore. If resistance is felt, twist gently while pulling to avoid damaging the rubber boot.
  5. 5
    Clean spark plug well
Use compressed air to blow out any debris, dirt, or oil from around the spark plug and valve cover bore. This prevents contamination from entering the combustion chamber when the plug is removed.
  6. 6
    Remove spark plug
Using the appropriate spark plug socket (typically 14mm or 16mm) with extension, carefully unthread the spark plug. Turn counterclockwise and remove the plug completely from the cylinder head. Inspect the plug condition for signs of engine issues.
  7. 7
Prepare and install new spark plug
Apply a thin coat of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plug, avoiding the electrode area. Hand thread the plug into the aluminum cylinder head, ensuring it threads smoothly without cross-threading. Torque to specification using the torque wrench.

  8. 8
    Install new ignition coil
Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of the new coil boot if desired. Align the coil with the spark plug and valve cover bore, then push down firmly until it seats completely. The coil should sit flush against the valve cover mounting surface.
  9. 9
    Secure ignition coil
Install the ignition coil mounting bolt and torque to specification. Ensure the coil does not move or rotate during tightening.

  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  11. 11
    Reinstall engine cover
Position the engine cover back onto the engine and secure all mounting points. Ensure the cover is properly seated and all fasteners are engaged.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal
  2. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool if applicable
  3. Verify all tools and parts have been removed from the engine bay

Verification

  • Start the engine and listen for smooth idle with no misfires or rough running
  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes related to the affected cylinder
  • Rev the engine gently to 2000-3000 RPM and verify smooth operation
  • Inspect the ignition coil area for any oil leaks or loose connections
  • Test drive the vehicle to confirm normal performance and acceleration
