Replacement of the tail pipe assembly on a 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo, including disconnection from the muffler or mid-pipe and removal of exhaust hangers.
Warnings
⚠️Exhaust system remains extremely hot for 30+ minutes after engine shutdown. Allow complete cooling before beginning work to prevent severe burns.
⚠Exhaust bolts may be corroded or seized. Apply penetrating oil 15-20 minutes before attempting removal to prevent bolt breakage.
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Never rely solely on a hydraulic jack.
ℹ️RWD configuration means exhaust routing differs from AWD models. Verify component layout before disassembly.

Parts
- Tail pipe assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Exhaust flange gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Exhaust hanger isolators × 2 — Replace if deteriorated
Preparation
- Ensure engine and exhaust system are completely cold to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Raise rear of vehicle using appropriate jack points and support securely on jack stands
- Spray all exhaust flange bolts and hanger bolts with penetrating oil and allow to soak for 15-20 minutes
- Inspect exhaust routing and identify tail pipe connection point to muffler/mid-pipe and all hanger locations
Procedure
- 1Locate and mark tail pipe connectionsIdentify the flange connection between the tail pipe and muffler assembly. On the RWD Levante, this is typically located just aft of the rear axle. Mark the orientation of any clamps or flanges to ensure proper alignment during reinstallation. Identify all rubber hanger mounts supporting the tail pipe (typically 2-3 locations).
- 2Support the tail pipe assemblyPosition a jack stand or support beneath the tail pipe near the center of mass to prevent sudden dropping when disconnected. Ensure support is stable but allows for downward movement during removal.
- 3Remove exhaust flange boltsUsing a 15mm socket, remove the bolts securing the tail pipe flange to the muffler or mid-pipe flange. There are typically 2-3 bolts at this connection. Work bolts evenly to prevent binding. If bolts are seized, apply additional penetrating oil and allow to soak, or carefully apply heat with a torch if conditions permit.⚠Do not force seized bolts as they may snap. If extreme resistance is encountered, apply heat carefully or use bolt extraction methods.Torque specExhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 4Separate flange connectionOnce bolts are removed, use a pry bar or rubber mallet to gently separate the flange connection. The old gasket may be stuck and require careful prying. Work around the perimeter evenly to avoid damaging the flange surfaces. Lower the tail pipe slightly on the support to create clearance.
- 5Disconnect exhaust hangersLocate all rubber hanger isolators supporting the tail pipe. Using a pry bar or by hand, compress and slide the tail pipe mounting tabs out of the rubber isolators. Work methodically from rear to front. A spray of soapy water can help lubricate stubborn hangers. Inspect rubber isolators for cracking or deterioration and replace if necessary.Torque specHanger Bolts22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- 6Remove tail pipe assemblyWith all connections and hangers disconnected, carefully lower and remove the tail pipe assembly from under the vehicle. Maneuver around the rear suspension components and differential. The tail pipe may be heavy and awkward to handle; use caution to avoid personal injury or damage to surrounding components.
- 7Clean flange surfacesUsing a wire brush, thoroughly clean the mating flange surface on the muffler or mid-pipe. Remove all traces of old gasket material, carbon buildup, and corrosion. The surface must be flat and clean for proper sealing. Inspect the flange for warping or damage; if present, repair or replacement may be necessary.
- 8Prepare new tail pipe assemblyUnpack the new tail pipe assembly and verify it matches the removed component in length, diameter, flange position, and hanger locations. Install new rubber hanger isolators on the chassis mounting points if replacements are needed. Position the new exhaust flange gasket on the muffler/mid-pipe flange.
- 9Install new tail pipeLift the new tail pipe assembly into position, aligning the flange with the muffler/mid-pipe connection. Engage the tail pipe mounting tabs into the rubber hanger isolators, starting from the front and working toward the rear. You may need to manipulate the pipe and use a pry bar to compress hangers for engagement. Ensure the tail pipe exit is properly oriented and positioned relative to the rear bumper.
- 10Install and torque flange boltsApply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new exhaust flange bolts. Insert bolts through the flange connection and hand-thread. Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern to ensure even clamping and gasket compression. Once snug, use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to specification. Verify gasket is properly seated and no gaps exist at the flange.ℹ️Anti-seize is critical for future serviceability in this high-temperature application. Apply to threads only, not to flange surfaces.Torque specExhaust Flange Bolts45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
- 11Verify tail pipe alignment and clearanceWith the tail pipe fully installed, verify proper alignment and clearance. Check that the pipe does not contact the rear axle, suspension components, chassis, or body panels. The tail pipe tip should be centered in the rear bumper cutout with even clearance on all sides. Adjust hanger positions if minor adjustments are needed.
Reassembly
- Remove jack stands and carefully lower vehicle to the ground
- Start engine and allow to idle, listening for exhaust leaks at the flange connection
- If leaks are detected, re-torque flange bolts after one heat cycle when system has cooled
Verification
- Start engine and verify no exhaust leaks are present at flange connection or hangers
- Rev engine to 3000 RPM and listen for unusual exhaust noise or rattling
- Visually inspect tail pipe position with engine running to ensure no contact with chassis or body
- Test drive vehicle and verify exhaust tone is normal with no vibration or resonance issues
- After first 50-100 miles, re-inspect flange connection for any signs of leakage or loosening
