Procedure
- 1Remove valve covers and accessory componentsRemove both valve covers by loosening bolts in reverse of tightening sequence. Disconnect ignition coils and all electrical connectors. Remove any vacuum lines attached to valve covers. Remove accessory drive belt by releasing tensioner. Remove alternator and A/C compressor mounting bolts but leave hoses attached and support components aside.Torque specCover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)Electrical Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 2Remove crankshaft pulleyUse crankshaft holding tool to prevent rotation. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt using breaker bar (note: high torque). Remove harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley from crankshaft snout. Inspect keyway for damage.⚠Crankshaft pulley bolt is very tight (137 lb-ft). Use proper holding tool to prevent engine rotation and flywheel damage.Torque specCrankshaft Pulley Bolt185 Nm (137 lb-ft)
- 3Remove front timing coverRemove all timing cover bolts, noting locations of different length bolts. There are different size bolts (standard and 8mm) that must be tracked carefully. Carefully separate timing cover from engine block. Clean all old gasket material and RTV from mating surfaces on both block and cover using plastic scraper. Inspect cover for cracks or warping.ℹ️Keep track of bolt locations - 8mm bolts go in specific positions and different lengths are used in various locations.Torque specCover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)
- 4Rotate engine to TDC and verify timing marksRotate crankshaft clockwise using socket on crankshaft bolt location until cylinder 1 is at TDC compression stroke. Verify timing marks on camshaft sprockets align with marks on cylinder heads. Install TDC timing pin into block to lock crankshaft position. Install camshaft locking tools to secure both camshafts in correct position. Take detailed photographs of chain routing and all timing marks.⚠️Absolutely critical that engine is at exact TDC with all timing marks aligned before proceeding. Verify multiple times.
- 5Release timing chain tensionRemove timing chain tensioner bolt and carefully extract tensioner. Note the tensioner ratchet position and mechanism condition. If tensioner shows wear or does not hold pressure, replace it. Keep tension on chain manually to prevent it from falling off sprockets during guide removal.⚠Chain may shift position when tensioner is removed. Keep light manual pressure on chain to maintain position on sprockets.Torque specTensioner Bolt21 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- 6Remove worn timing chain guideRemove timing chain guide bolts securing the worn guide(s). Note exact position and orientation of guide before removal. Inspect guide for wear patterns, cracks, or missing material. Remove guide carefully without disturbing chain position on sprockets. If guide bolts show wear or stretching, replace them.ℹ️Inspect removed guide for wear patterns which may indicate other timing system issues such as chain stretch or misalignment.Torque specGuide Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 7Inspect timing chain and sprocketsWith guide removed, thoroughly inspect timing chain for stretch, wear, or damaged links. Check all sprocket teeth for wear, chipping, or damage. Measure chain stretch if possible using dial indicator. Inspect all other guides, rails, and contact surfaces for wear. If chain shows more than specification stretch or any damage, replace the complete timing set (beyond scope of this repair).⚠A worn guide often indicates chain stretch or other timing component wear. If chain or sprockets show significant wear, complete timing set replacement is recommended.
- 8Install new timing chain guidePosition new timing chain guide in exact location of old guide. Verify guide contacts chain properly and fits all mounting points. Apply medium-strength thread locking compound to guide bolts. Install and hand-tighten all guide bolts, then torque to specification in a cross-pattern. Verify guide is seated fully and chain runs smoothly over guide surface.ℹ️Ensure new guide material matches OEM specifications - aftermarket guides may not provide adequate durability in this high-performance engine.Torque specGuide Bolts26 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 9Install timing chain tensionerIf reusing tensioner, reset ratchet mechanism per manufacturer procedure. If installing new tensioner, verify it is in compressed/unlocked position for installation. Install tensioner into bore and secure with bolt to specification. Verify tensioner releases and applies proper pressure to chain. Remove camshaft locking tools and verify chain maintains position.Torque specTensioner Bolt21 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- 10Verify timing alignmentWith tensioner installed, remove TDC pin and camshaft locking tools. Manually rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions clockwise. Reinstall TDC pin and verify it slides into position at TDC. Reinstall camshaft locking tools and verify they engage properly with camshafts still in correct position. Repeat verification twice more to confirm timing is correct.⚠️If timing marks do not realign after two crankshaft rotations, DO NOT proceed. Disassemble and identify timing error before continuing.
- 11Install new timing cover gasket and sealInstall new crankshaft front seal into timing cover using seal driver. Ensure seal is flush and properly seated. Clean timing cover and block gasket surfaces again with solvent to remove any oil residue. Apply thin bead of Maserati-approved RTV silicone to timing cover gasket surfaces per service manual diagram. Install new gasket onto cover or block per design. Apply small amount of RTV to specified corners where cover meets block joints.ℹ️Use only Maserati-approved RTV sealant. Incorrect sealant can break down from oil contact and cause leaks.Torque specGasket Surface Bolts22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- 12Install timing coverRemove timing pin and camshaft locking tools for final time. Carefully position timing cover onto engine block, ensuring gasket remains in position and cover slides over crankshaft snout without damaging seal. Install all timing cover bolts finger-tight, keeping track of correct bolt lengths and positions. Tighten 8mm bolts first in specified sequence to proper torque, then tighten remaining cover bolts in sequence. Finally torque all gasket surface bolts to specification.⚠Follow tightening sequence exactly to prevent cover warping and oil leaks. 8mm bolts are torqued differently than standard cover bolts.Torque specCover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)Gasket Surface Bolts22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
- 13Install crankshaft pulley and accessoriesClean crankshaft snout and inside of pulley. Install harmonic balancer/pulley onto crankshaft, aligning keyway. Install new crankshaft pulley bolt with thread locking compound. Use holding tool and torque bolt to specification (137 lb-ft). Reinstall alternator and A/C compressor to mounting bolts at specified torque. Install accessory drive belt per routing diagram.Torque specCrankshaft Pulley Bolt185 Nm (137 lb-ft)Mounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 14Install valve coversInstall new valve cover gaskets onto both valve covers. Ensure all gasket seating grooves are clean and gaskets seat properly. Position valve covers onto cylinder heads. Install valve cover bolts and tighten in proper sequence from center outward to specified torque. Reconnect all ignition coils, electrical connectors, and vacuum lines. Torque all electrical connector bolts to specification.Torque specCover Bolts18 Nm (13 lb-ft)Electrical Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 15Refill fluids and final checksInstall new oil filter and torque to specification. Refill engine with 5.5 quarts of Selenia Racing 10W-60 oil. Refill coolant system if drained. Reinstall engine under-covers and belly pan. Reconnect battery negative cable. Perform final visual inspection of all connections, bolts, and components. Check that no tools or parts remain in engine bay.
