Remove and replace the combination switch assembly on the steering column, which controls turn signals, wipers, and high beams.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 15 minutes before starting work to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
Do not turn steering wheel with combination switch disconnected or removed as this may damage the clock spring
The combination switch contains sensitive electronic components - handle with care and avoid static discharge
ℹ️Keep track of all fastener locations as some may be different lengths

Parts

  • Combination switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position
  3. Turn ignition off and remove key/fob from vehicle
  4. Disconnect battery negative terminal and secure cable away from battery post
  5. Wait minimum 15 minutes for airbag system discharge
  6. Adjust steering column to lowest position for access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the T20 Torx screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws on underside). Remove screws and carefully pull lower cover away from column. Store screws in magnetic tray noting their positions.

    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
With lower cover removed, locate the T20 Torx screws securing upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws at rear of cover). Remove screws and gently lift upper cover off, being careful of any wiring clips that may be routed along the column. Disconnect any accessory lighting connectors if present.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Access combination switch mounting
With covers removed, identify the combination switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Note the routing of the wiring harness. Locate the two mounting screws (T25 Torx) securing the switch body to the steering column bracket.
  4. 4
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the main electrical connector for the combination switch (typically a large multi-pin connector near the base of the steering column). Press the connector release tab and carefully pull connector straight out. If connector is stubborn, gently rock side-to-side while pulling - do not force.
  5. 5
    Remove combination switch assembly
Remove the two T25 Torx mounting screws securing the combination switch to the steering column. Carefully slide the switch assembly off the column shaft, noting the orientation of any locating pins or tabs. Inspect the mounting bracket for any damage or wear.
    Torque spec
    Bracket Bolts22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Prepare new combination switch
Unpack new combination switch and verify it matches the original unit. If equipped with adjustable levers, set them to match the old switch position. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector pins if desired for corrosion protection.
  7. 7
    Install new combination switch
Align the new combination switch with the steering column shaft, ensuring any locating pins or tabs engage properly. Slide the switch onto the column until it seats fully against the mounting bracket. Install the two T25 Torx mounting screws finger-tight, then torque to specification.

    Bracket Bolts22 Nm (16 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Reconnect electrical connector
Route the wiring harness to avoid any pinch points or interference with steering column movement. Align the electrical connector and push firmly until you hear/feel a positive click. Gently tug on connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring no wires are pinched. Install and torque upper cover screws. Position lower cover and verify alignment tabs engage properly. Install and torque lower cover screws to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect battery negative terminal and torque to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal. Enter vehicle and turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Allow vehicle systems to initialize for approximately 30 seconds.
Battery terminal bolts must not be overtightened - 6.0 Nm only
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all steering column covers are properly secured with no gaps
  2. Check that combination switch levers operate smoothly without binding
  3. Ensure no wiring is visible or pinched between covers
  4. Reset clock and radio presets if necessary after battery disconnection

Verification

  • With ignition ON, verify turn signal indicators illuminate properly on instrument cluster in both left and right positions
  • Test high beam operation and verify blue high beam indicator illuminates on cluster
  • Cycle windshield wipers through all speed settings including intermittent, low, and high
  • Test windshield washer function
  • Verify hazard lights function properly with switch button
  • Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to ensure no interference with column covers or binding
  • Check for any warning lights on instrument cluster related to lighting or wiper systems
  • Test cruise control functions if combination switch includes cruise control stalks
