Replace or adjust the kickdown cable on a 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo to restore proper transmission downshift response during full-throttle acceleration.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Exhaust components and turbochargers remain extremely hot for extended periods.
⚠The kickdown cable is under spring tension at the throttle body. Control cable release carefully to avoid injury or component damage.
ℹ️This vehicle uses an electronically controlled ZF 8-speed transmission. Verify that a mechanical kickdown cable is actually present, as some model years use fully electronic throttle and shift control.

Parts
- Kickdown cable × 1 — Use OEM Maserati specification
- Cable retaining clips × 3 — Various sizes, inspect and replace as needed
- Throttle body cable grommet × 1 — Use OEM specification if damaged
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine and exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 2 hours)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 10 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on four retention points
- Remove air intake duct between air filter box and throttle body for access
Procedure
- 1Access throttle body cable connectionLocate the kickdown cable attachment point at the throttle body assembly on the driver's side of the engine. Remove the protective cover if equipped by removing screws. Use inspection mirror to identify cable routing and attachment mechanism.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect cable from throttle bodyUsing needle-nose pliers, carefully compress the cable end fitting and rotate to release it from the throttle cam. Note the exact cable routing and any retention clips. Take a photo for reference during reassembly. Remove cable from throttle body bracket by sliding grommet out of slot.⚠Cable is under spring tension. Control release to prevent the cable from snapping back and causing damage.
- 3Remove interior lower trim panelFrom inside the vehicle, remove the lower driver's side dashboard trim panel to access the pedal assembly area. Remove fasteners and carefully pull panel away from clips. Locate where the kickdown cable passes through the firewall.
- 4Disconnect cable from accelerator pedal assemblyLocate the kickdown cable connection at the accelerator pedal mechanism. Note the cable routing and any adjustment mechanisms. Disconnect the cable from the pedal assembly by releasing the retention clip and sliding the cable end out of the pedal arm slot.
- 5Remove cable from firewall grommetWorking from the engine bay, carefully pull the cable through the firewall grommet. If the grommet is damaged or shows signs of cracking, remove it completely for replacement. Note the orientation of the grommet for proper reinstallation.
- 6Trace and remove cable from transmission connectionFollow the cable routing along the engine bay toward the transmission. The cable connects to the valve body or throttle valve mechanism on the driver's side of the transmission. Remove any cable retention clips along the routing path. Disconnect the cable from the transmission by releasing the locking mechanism and sliding the cable end fitting free.ℹ️Some cable routing may pass near exhaust components. Verify all surfaces are cool before proceeding.
- 7Install new kickdown cable at transmissionRoute the new cable from the transmission connection point toward the firewall, following the exact path of the original cable. Connect the cable end to the transmission throttle valve mechanism, ensuring the locking clip fully engages. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the cable.
- 8Route cable through firewall and connect to pedalFrom the engine bay, feed the cable through the firewall grommet (install new grommet if needed). Working from inside the vehicle, pull sufficient cable slack through and connect the cable end to the accelerator pedal assembly. Ensure the cable seats properly in the pedal arm slot and the retention clip locks in place.
- 9Connect cable to throttle bodyRoute the cable from the firewall to the throttle body following the original path. Install cable retention clips at all original positions. Insert the cable grommet into the throttle body bracket slot, then connect the cable end to the throttle cam by rotating into position until it clicks. Verify the cable moves freely when throttle cam is actuated by hand.
- 10Adjust cable tensionWith the cable connected at both ends, check for proper free play at the throttle body. There should be minimal slack with the throttle closed, but the cable should not be pulling the throttle open. If adjustment is needed, use the adjustment mechanism at either the transmission or throttle body end (varies by configuration). Cable should become taut just as the throttle reaches wide-open position.
- 11Reinstall protective covers and trimReinstall the throttle body protective cover if equipped, torquing screws to specification. Reinstall the interior lower trim panel, ensuring all clips engage properly. Reinstall air intake duct and engine cover.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemsReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position without starting the engine and allow all systems to initialize for 30 seconds. This allows the throttle body and transmission control modules to relearn idle and throttle positions.
Reassembly
- Ensure all cable retention clips are installed at original positions to prevent cable chafing
- Verify cable routing does not contact any hot exhaust components or moving parts
- Confirm firewall grommet is properly seated to prevent water intrusion into cabin
- Double-check all interior trim panels are securely fastened
Verification
- Start engine and verify smooth idle with no throttle hunting or irregular RPM
- With engine running, slowly press accelerator pedal and verify smooth cable operation without binding
- Perform a test drive and verify transmission downshifts properly under full-throttle acceleration (kickdown function)
- Verify transmission upshifts normally during light throttle operation
- Check for any abnormal noises from cable routing areas during throttle operation
- Inspect cable routing in engine bay after test drive to ensure no contact with hot components
