Replace knock sensor(s) on the 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine, requiring removal of intake manifold components to access sensors mounted in the engine valley.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Hot engine components can cause severe burns.
⚠️Knock sensors are torque-critical components. Over or under-tightening will cause false signals and engine damage from improper timing advance.
⚠Do not drop or impact knock sensors as the piezoelectric element is fragile and will fail.
ℹ️This engine has two knock sensors located in the valley beneath the intake manifold.

Parts
- Knock sensor × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Intake manifold gasket set × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Engine cover grommets (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 5 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward firmly to release mounting grommets
- Take photos of vacuum line routing and electrical connector positions for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove intake air system componentsDisconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector. Loosen clamps at both ends of the intake tube and remove the air intake tube assembly. Remove the air filter housing if necessary for access.
- 2Disconnect intake manifold electrical connectionsDisconnect all electrical connectors from components mounted on intake manifold including fuel injector connectors, throttle body connector, and any sensor connectors. Press release tabs and pull connectors straight back to avoid pin damage.
- 3Remove vacuum lines and breather hosesDisconnect all vacuum lines from the intake manifold noting their positions. Remove PCV hoses and breather lines. Use panel tools to carefully release any quick-connect fittings without damaging the plastic nipples.
- 4Remove intake manifold mounting boltsRemove all intake manifold mounting bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence (work from outside toward center). There are typically 8-10 mounting bolts. Keep bolts organized by location as some may be different lengths.Torque specMounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 5Remove intake manifold assemblyCarefully lift the intake manifold assembly straight up and away from the engine. You may need to gently wiggle it to break the gasket seal. Set manifold aside on a clean protected surface with mating surface facing up to prevent damage.
- 6Access knock sensorsWith the intake manifold removed, locate the two knock sensors in the engine valley. They are mounted on the sides of the cylinder block between the cylinder banks. Clean any debris or oil from the area around the sensors.⚠Keep debris out of open intake ports. Stuff clean shop rags into intake ports on cylinder heads to prevent foreign material entry.
- 7Disconnect knock sensor electrical connectorsPress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector from each knock sensor. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 8Remove knock sensorsUsing appropriate socket and extension, carefully remove each knock sensor by turning counterclockwise. Avoid impacting or dropping the sensors. Inspect the sensor mounting bosses on the engine block for damage or debris.
- 9Clean mounting surfacesThoroughly clean the knock sensor mounting bosses on the engine block with a plastic scraper and shop rag. Remove all old thread sealant or debris. The mounting surface must be completely clean and dry for proper sensor function. Also clean the intake manifold gasket surfaces on both the manifold and cylinder heads.
- 10Install new knock sensorsThread new knock sensors into mounting bosses by hand until finger-tight. Ensure sensors thread in smoothly without cross-threading. Using torque wrench, tighten each knock sensor to specification in a single smooth motion without stopping. Do not over-torque as this will damage the sensor's piezoelectric element.⚠️Knock sensor torque is absolutely critical. Use accurate torque wrench and tighten to exact specification. Over-torque will pre-load the sensor causing false knock detection.Torque specKnock Sensor20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect knock sensor electrical connectorsApply a small amount of dielectric grease to the inside of each knock sensor connector. Reconnect electrical connectors to each sensor ensuring they click fully into place. Route wiring harness as originally installed.
- 12Install new intake manifold gasketsRemove shop rags from intake ports. Install new intake manifold gaskets onto the cylinder heads. Ensure gaskets are properly seated in their locating features and all port openings align correctly.
- 13Reinstall intake manifoldCarefully lower intake manifold assembly onto the engine, aligning it with the gaskets and dowel pins. Start all mounting bolts by hand. Tighten mounting bolts in proper sequence (center outward in a cross pattern) to specification using torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts50 Nm (37 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect all intake system componentsReconnect all vacuum lines, breather hoses, and PCV lines to their original positions using reference photos. Reconnect all electrical connectors to fuel injectors, throttle body, and sensors. Ensure all connectors click fully into locked position. Reinstall air intake tube and tighten clamps. Reconnect mass airflow sensor.
- 15Final reassemblyReinstall engine cover ensuring grommets seat properly in mounting locations. Reconnect negative battery terminal. Double-check that all electrical connectors are secure and no tools or rags were left in engine compartment.
Reassembly
- Tighten all fasteners to specified torque values using proper sequence for intake manifold bolts
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated with locking tabs engaged
- Ensure all vacuum lines and breather hoses are reconnected to correct locations
- Verify no tools or shop rags remain in engine compartment before closing hood
Verification
- Start engine and verify it runs smoothly without misfires or unusual noises
- Check for vacuum leaks around intake manifold by listening for hissing sounds at idle
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify no warning lights appear on dashboard
- Use scan tool to verify knock sensor signals are being received by ECU and show normal voltage range (typically 2.5-4.5V at idle)
- Road test vehicle under light acceleration to verify no knock sensor codes are triggered
- Verify engine performs normally with proper throttle response and no hesitation
