Replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor on a 2017 Maserati Levante 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo to restore proper air intake measurement and engine performance.
Warnings
⚠Do not touch the sensing element inside the MAF sensor with fingers or tools as contamination will cause malfunction
⚠Allow engine to cool for at least 15 minutes before beginning work to avoid burns from hot intake components
ℹ️The MAF sensor is a precision instrument - handle with care and avoid dropping

Parts
- Mass Air Flow Sensor × 1 — Use OEM Maserati specification
- MAF sensor O-ring or gasket (if applicable) × 1 — Verify if included with sensor
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool for at least 15 minutes
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate the MAF sensor in the air intake tube between the air filter housing and throttle body on the passenger side of engine bay
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and disconnect the cable. Secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection during the procedure.
- 2Loosen air intake tube clampsLocate the hose clamps on both sides of the MAF sensor assembly (upstream near air filter box and downstream toward throttle body). Using a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket depending on clamp type, loosen both clamps but do not fully remove them yet.Torque specAir Intake Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect MAF sensor electrical connectorPress down on the locking tab of the electrical connector attached to the MAF sensor and carefully pull the connector straight out. Wiggle gently if it resists - do not force. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage.⚠Do not pull on the wires - grasp the connector body only to avoid damaging the wiring harness
- 4Remove MAF sensor mounting screwsUsing a T25 Torx bit, remove the two screws securing the MAF sensor to the air intake tube. These are typically located on opposite sides of the sensor housing. Keep screws in a safe location for reinstallation.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 5Extract MAF sensor from air intake tubeCarefully slide the MAF sensor out of the intake tube. Note the orientation of the sensor and the position of any alignment tabs or gaskets. If an O-ring or gasket is present, inspect it for damage or deterioration.
- 6Clean mating surfacesUsing a clean lint-free cloth, wipe down the inside of the air intake tube where the MAF sensor mounts. Remove any dirt, oil residue, or debris. Ensure the sealing surface is completely clean and dry before installing the new sensor.
- 7Install new MAF sensorIf the new sensor includes a gasket or O-ring, ensure it is properly seated in the sensor groove. Carefully insert the new MAF sensor into the air intake tube, aligning it with the mounting holes and ensuring proper orientation (arrow on sensor should point toward engine/airflow direction). Do not touch the sensing element.⚠Verify the sensor is oriented correctly with airflow direction arrow pointing toward the throttle body
- 8Secure MAF sensor with mounting screwsInstall the two T25 Torx mounting screws by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating of the sensor.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the MAF sensor until you hear or feel a distinct click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely attached.
- 10Tighten air intake tube clampsPosition the intake tube properly on both sides of the MAF sensor assembly. Tighten both hose clamps to specification, ensuring the tube is properly seated and there are no air leaks. Verify clamps are positioned over the beaded sections of the tubes.Torque specAir Intake Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect battery negative terminalReconnect the negative battery cable to the battery post and tighten the clamp securely using a 10mm socket. Ensure good contact with the battery terminal.
Reassembly
- Ensure all intake tube clamps are properly tightened to prevent air leaks that could affect engine performance
- Verify the MAF sensor electrical connector is fully seated and locked
- Double-check that no tools or cloths were left in the engine bay
Verification
- Start the engine and allow it to idle - verify smooth idle with no rough running or stalling
- Check for any unusual hissing sounds near the MAF sensor indicating air leaks at the clamps
- Use an OBD-II scanner to verify no MAF-related fault codes are present (P0100-P0104 range)
- Take vehicle for a test drive to verify normal acceleration response and throttle behavior
- Monitor fuel economy over the next several fill-ups to confirm proper MAF sensor operation
