Replace the output speed sensor on the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission to restore proper speedometer operation and transmission shift quality.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid may be hot if vehicle was recently driven. Allow 30 minutes cooling time.
⚠The output speed sensor is located on the transmission housing and will release approximately 0.5-1.0 quarts of fluid when removed.
ℹ️Clearing fault codes requires a Maserati-compatible scan tool after repair.
⚠️Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath. Do not rely on jack alone.

Parts
- Transmission output speed sensor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Output speed sensor O-ring × 1 — Usually included with sensor
- ZF Lifeguard 8 transmission fluid × 1 — S671090255 or equivalent
Fluids
- ZF Lifeguard 8 — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure transmission is in PARK position
- Raise vehicle on lift or jack stands to working height
- Remove engine undertray and transmission splash shields if equipped
- Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven
Procedure
- 1Locate the output speed sensorFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the output speed sensor on the driver side of the transmission housing near the output shaft. The sensor is identified by its electrical connector and single mounting bolt. It is positioned approximately mid-way along the transmission case.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the output speed sensor. Ensure the connector is positioned away from the work area to prevent fluid contamination.
- 3Position drain panPlace the drain pan directly below the output speed sensor. Position it to capture fluid that will drain when the sensor is removed, accounting for approximately 0.5-1.0 quarts of ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid.
- 4Remove sensor mounting boltUsing the appropriate metric socket, remove the single bolt securing the output speed sensor to the transmission case. Keep the bolt clean for reinstallation.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the output speed sensorCarefully pull the sensor straight out from the transmission case. Expect transmission fluid to drain as the sensor is removed. Allow fluid to fully drain into the pan. Inspect the sensor for debris or metal particles on the magnetic tip.
- 6Inspect and clean the sensor boreExamine the sensor mounting bore in the transmission case for debris, metal shavings, or damage. Use a clean lint-free shop towel to carefully clean the sealing surface. Do not allow any debris to enter the transmission.
- 7Prepare the new sensorRemove the new output speed sensor from packaging. Verify the new O-ring is properly seated in the sensor groove. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid to ease installation and prevent damage.
- 8Install the new sensorCarefully insert the new output speed sensor into the transmission case bore, ensuring proper alignment. Push firmly until the sensor is fully seated and the mounting hole aligns. Do not force or cross-thread.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 9Secure the sensorInstall the sensor mounting bolt and hand-tighten. Using a calibrated torque wrench, torque the bolt to specification. Ensure the sensor body does not rotate during tightening.Torque specSensor Bolts11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the output speed sensor, ensuring it clicks into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged and the connection is secure.
- 11Refill transmission fluidAccess the transmission fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission case. Remove the fill plug and using a fluid pump or funnel with flexible spout, add approximately 1.0 quart of ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid to replace what was lost. Fluid should reach the bottom of the fill plug hole when at operating temperature.Torque specFill Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall underbody panelsReinstall all transmission splash shields and engine undertray components removed during preparation. Ensure all fasteners are properly secured.
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle to ground when all work is complete
- Start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes
- Cycle transmission through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-Manual modes) while stationary
- Check transmission fluid level at operating temperature (176°F/80°C) with engine running
- Top off fluid as necessary to maintain proper level at fill plug
Verification
- Use Maserati-compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear any stored transmission fault codes
- Verify output speed sensor signal is being received by the transmission control module
- Test drive vehicle and confirm speedometer operates correctly
- Verify smooth transmission shifting through all gears under normal driving conditions
- Recheck transmission fluid level after test drive and top off if necessary
- Inspect sensor area for any fluid leaks after test drive
