Replacement of the climate control module (CCM) located in the dashboard, which controls automatic climate functions, air distribution, and temperature regulation.

Warnings

Climate control module must be coded to the vehicle using Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnostic System after installation or system will not function correctly.
Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and require reinitialization of power windows and sunroof.
ℹ️The climate control module is located behind the center console climate control panel and requires removal of dashboard trim components.

Parts

  • Climate Control Module (CCM) × 1 — A2218704189 or Use OEM specification
  • Dashboard trim clips (assorted) × 5 — Use OEM specification
  • Control panel retaining screws × 4 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn off ignition and remove key from vehicle
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 10 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  4. Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position
  5. Ensure climate control system is in OFF position before starting work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower dashboard trim panel
Using plastic trim removal tools, carefully pry out the lower dashboard trim panel below the climate control unit. Start from the bottom edge and work upward. Release the retaining clips by pulling gently but firmly. Disconnect any electrical connectors for courtesy lights if equipped.
  2. 2
    Remove climate control faceplate
Remove the hazard light switch by pressing the tabs on each side and pulling forward. Behind the hazard switch location, locate and remove two T20 Torx screws. Carefully pull the climate control faceplate forward from the top, then lift upward to disengage bottom clips. Set aside on a protected surface to avoid scratches.
  3. 3
    Disconnect climate control panel connectors
Locate the multiple electrical connectors on the back of the climate control panel. Press the release tabs and carefully disconnect all harness connectors. Note the position and color coding of each connector for reinstallation. There are typically 3-4 multi-pin connectors depending on options.
Do not pull on wires; always grasp the connector body to avoid damaging pins or wiring.
  4. 4
    Remove climate control panel assembly
Remove four T25 Torx screws securing the climate control panel bracket to the dashboard frame. Carefully withdraw the entire climate control panel assembly from the dashboard opening. Place on clean work surface with connectors facing upward.

    Access climate control module mounting
With the panel assembly removed, use flashlight to locate the climate control module mounted behind the panel location. It is a rectangular black box approximately 4x6 inches with a large multi-pin connector. Remove the metal or plastic mounting bracket by removing two 10mm bolts.

    Bracket Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Disconnect module main connector
Press the locking tab on the large multi-pin connector attached to the climate control module. Rock the connector gently side-to-side while pulling straight out. If connector is difficult to remove, check that locking tab is fully depressed. Inspect connector pins for damage or corrosion.
  7. 7
    Remove climate control module
Pull the climate control module straight out from its mounting location. Note the orientation and any additional small ground wires or temperature sensors that may be attached. If present, disconnect any additional connectors or ground wires.
  8. 8
    Install new climate control module
Position the new climate control module in the same orientation as the original. Slide it into the mounting bracket location ensuring it is fully seated. Reconnect any ground wires or temperature sensor connectors that were disconnected. Connect the main multi-pin connector, ensuring it clicks firmly into place and locking tab engages.
  9. 9
Reinstall mounting bracket and panel assembly
Reinstall the climate control module mounting bracket using the two 10mm bolts. Torque to specification. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the climate control panel in their original positions. Carefully guide the panel assembly back into the dashboard opening and secure with four T25 Torx screws.

    Reinstall trim components
Position the climate control faceplate, engaging bottom clips first, then pressing top section until it clicks into place. Reinstall the two T20 Torx screws behind the hazard switch location. Reinstall hazard light switch until it clicks. Reconnect any courtesy light connectors and reinstall lower dashboard trim panel by aligning clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage.
  11. 11
    Code and activate new module
Reconnect negative battery terminal. Using Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnostic System or compatible diagnostic tool, access the climate control system. Perform SCN (Software Calibration Number) coding to program the new module to the vehicle's VIN and configuration. Follow prompts to complete activation and variant coding for installed options (4-zone climate, rear controls, etc.).
⚠️Module will NOT function properly without proper coding. Do not operate vehicle climate system until coding is complete.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or loose clips
  2. Reinitialize power windows by holding down switch until fully closed, then continue holding for 2 seconds; repeat for each window
  3. Reinitialize sunroof by pressing close button until fully closed, then continue holding for 10 seconds until sunroof cycles briefly
  4. Reset radio clock and station presets as needed

Verification

  • Turn ignition to position 2 and verify climate control display illuminates with no error messages
  • Test automatic climate control by setting to AUTO mode at 72°F and confirming blower speed adjusts automatically
  • Verify all air distribution modes function correctly (defrost, floor, face, bi-level)
  • Check that left and right temperature zones adjust independently
  • Test recirculation button and verify indicator light operates correctly
  • Verify rear climate controls function properly if equipped with 4-zone system
  • Use diagnostic scan tool to confirm no DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are present in climate control system
  • Run climate system for 5-10 minutes to ensure proper operation and that desired temperature is reached
