Diagnostic Scan

Perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan of all vehicle control modules using Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnostic System (SDS) or compatible scan tool to identify fault codes and system malfunctions.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure all vehicle doors, trunk, and hood are fully closed to prevent body control module false codes
3. Turn off all accessories including radio, climate control, and lights
4. If battery voltage is below 12.4V, connect battery charger/maintainer to prevent voltage drop during scan
5. Verify ambient temperature is above 50°F (10°C) for accurate system readings
6. Have VIN number available for proper vehicle identification in diagnostic software

Procedure

1. 1

   Locate OBD-II diagnostic port
   The OBD-II port is located under the driver's side dashboard, to the left of the steering column near the hood release. Remove any plastic trim panel if present by gently pulling downward to access the 16-pin connector.

   Connect diagnostic equipment
   Connect the OBD-II cable from your Mercedes-Benz Star Diagnostic System or compatible scan tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Ensure the connection is fully seated and secure. Connect the scan tool to your laptop/tablet via USB or wireless connection as applicable.

   Turn ignition to position II
   Insert key and turn ignition to position II (all dashboard lights illuminated, engine off). Do not start the engine. For Keyless-Go equipped vehicles, press the Start/Stop button twice without pressing the brake pedal. Wait 10 seconds for all modules to initialize.

   Launch diagnostic software and establish communication
   Open your diagnostic software and select 'New Diagnosis' or equivalent function. Enter the VIN or allow automatic VIN detection. Select model year 2007-2013, S65 AMG, and M275 6.0L V12 BiTurbo engine. Wait for software to establish communication with all control modules. The S65 AMG typically has 40-60+ addressable modules.

   Perform full system scan
   Select 'Complete Vehicle Scan' or 'All Systems Scan' function. The scan will interrogate all control modules including engine control units (2x for V12), transmission, ABS/ESP, SRS airbag, Active Body Control (ABC), COMAND, instrument cluster, and all comfort/convenience modules. This process typically takes 15-25 minutes. Monitor progress and note any modules that fail to communicate.

   Review and document fault codes
   Once scan is complete, review all stored fault codes (DTCs) and freeze frame data. Document each code with its description, freeze frame data, and occurrence count. Pay special attention to codes from both engine control units (left and right cylinder banks), turbocharger control, and ABC suspension system as these are common concern areas. Note whether codes are current/active or stored/pending.

   Check for manufacturer service campaigns
   Use the diagnostic software's service campaign function to check if any outstanding recalls or technical service bulletins apply to this VIN. The M275 engine and ABC suspension have known service campaigns that may relate to current fault codes.

   Review live data and system parameters
   For any fault codes identified, navigate to the relevant module and review live data streams. For engine codes, check both banks' oxygen sensor readings, boost pressure (should reach 11-15 PSI under load), and fuel trim values. For ABC codes, verify ride height sensor values and hydraulic pressure readings (should be 190-210 bar at idle).

   Perform actuator tests if needed
   If diagnostic scan indicates specific component faults, use the scan tool's actuator test function to verify component operation. Common tests include turbocharger wastegate actuators, ABC suspension valve testing, and fuel injector activation. Only perform actuator tests if engine is at normal operating temperature and you understand the test procedure.

    Save and print diagnostic report
    Save the complete diagnostic session including all fault codes, freeze frame data, and live data snapshots to the diagnostic software. Print or export a comprehensive report for customer records and repair planning. Include module communication status, software versions, and any adaptations that may need to be reset after repairs.

    Disconnect equipment and return vehicle to normal state
    Turn ignition to position 0 (off) and remove key. Disconnect the diagnostic cable from the OBD-II port. If battery charger was used, disconnect it from the battery. Reinstall any trim panels removed to access the diagnostic port. Remove any equipment from the vehicle interior.

Reassembly

1. Ensure OBD-II port area is clear of tools and diagnostic cables
2. Reinstall any dashboard trim panels removed during the procedure
3. Remove battery charger if used during diagnostic process
4. Verify all vehicle settings remain unchanged (radio presets, seat positions, climate control)

Verification

• Confirm complete diagnostic report is saved with all fault codes and freeze frame data documented
• Verify all control modules communicated successfully or note which modules failed to respond
• Ensure ignition cycles properly through all positions without diagnostic equipment connected
• Confirm no new warning lights appeared on instrument cluster after diagnostic session
• Review fault code priority to determine which repairs should be addressed first based on safety and drivability concerns
