Third Brake Light

Replace the center high-mounted stop lamp (third brake light) assembly located in the rear package shelf area of the vehicle.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. Allow vehicle interior to cool if parked in sun (prevents burns from hot plastic)
4. Ensure rear package shelf area is clear of loose items
5. Have replacement third brake light assembly available and inspected for damage

Procedure

1. 1

   Access rear package shelf
   Open the trunk fully. The third brake light is mounted in the rear package shelf between the rear seat and rear window. You will access it from inside the trunk, looking forward toward the passenger compartment.

   Remove rear seat access panel
   Locate the upholstered access panel on the rear package shelf in the trunk area. This panel is typically secured with clips. Using trim removal tools, carefully pry the panel upward starting from one side to release the retaining clips. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips. Set panel aside in a clean area.

   Locate third brake light mounting fasteners
   With the access panel removed, you will see the back of the third brake light assembly. Identify the T20 Torx mounting screws (typically 2-4 screws) securing the light assembly to the package shelf structure. Note the position of the electrical connector.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector attached to the back of the third brake light assembly. Press the release tab on the connector and carefully pull straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to partially loosen the mounting screws first to create clearance.

   Remove mounting fasteners
   Using the T20 Torx driver, remove all mounting screws securing the third brake light assembly. Keep screws organized as they will be reused unless damaged. Support the light assembly from the top (passenger compartment side) if possible to prevent it from falling when the last screw is removed.

   Remove old third brake light assembly
   Carefully pull the old brake light assembly away from the package shelf mounting location. It may require gentle wiggling to clear any alignment pins or guides. Inspect the mounting area for debris or damage. Clean the mounting surface with a clean microfiber cloth if needed.

   Install new third brake light assembly
   Position the new third brake light assembly into the package shelf opening. Align any locating pins or guides with their corresponding holes. Ensure the gasket or seal (if equipped) is properly seated to prevent water intrusion and light leakage.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Insert and hand-thread all mounting screws to prevent cross-threading. Once all screws are started, tighten them in a crossing pattern to ensure even pressure distribution. Tighten screws firmly but do not overtighten as you risk cracking the light housing or stripping the mounting points in the plastic package shelf structure.

   Connect electrical connector
   Reconnect the electrical connector to the new third brake light assembly. Push firmly until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.

    Test brake light operation
    Before reinstalling the access panel, turn the ignition to position II (do not start engine). Have an assistant press the brake pedal while you verify the third brake light illuminates properly. Check for full brightness and ensure all LED segments (if LED type) are functioning. If light does not operate, verify connector engagement and check for damaged pins.

    Reinstall access panel
    Position the rear package shelf access panel over the opening. Align the retaining clips with their receptacles. Press firmly on the panel at each clip location until you hear or feel each clip snap into place. Ensure panel is flush and secure around entire perimeter.

Reassembly

1. Verify access panel is properly secured with all clips fully engaged
2. Remove any tools or parts from trunk area
3. Check that no electrical connectors or wiring are pinched by the access panel

Verification

• Perform final brake light test with ignition on and brake pedal depressed - verify third brake light illuminates fully
• Inspect from outside vehicle to confirm light output is bright and even with no dark spots
• Verify light turns off completely when brake pedal is released
• Check that access panel is secure and properly seated with no gaps or rattles
• Test drive vehicle in safe area and have someone follow to confirm third brake light operates during actual braking
