Airbag - Driver

This procedure removes and replaces the driver's side airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2007 Ram 3500, including proper disarming and system verification.

• Airbag module mounting fasteners (if reuse not recommended) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake firmly
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from ignition
3. Ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead and steering wheel is centered - mark position if necessary
4. Open hood and disconnect negative battery cable, then disconnect positive battery cable
5. Wait minimum 2 minutes (120 seconds) after battery disconnection to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge - this is MANDATORY
6. Turn steering wheel lock to unlock position if equipped with steering lock (wheel should move slightly but do not rotate it)
7. Position yourself comfortably in driver's seat with clear access to back of steering wheel

Procedure

   Access airbag module mounting fasteners
   Look at the back side of the steering wheel (from driver's seat, looking up underneath). Locate the two access holes on either side of the steering wheel hub. These holes provide access to the airbag module mounting fasteners. On some models, small plastic plugs may cover these holes - remove them if present using a flathead screwdriver.

   Remove airbag module mounting fasteners
   Verify the airbag retention method for this vehicle in the factory service manual before proceeding. The 2007 Ram driver airbag is commonly held by spring-clip retention pins accessed from the rear of the steering wheel, released by inserting a tool into the access holes to depress the clips, rather than by removable Torx screws. If screw-type fasteners are used, confirm the exact Torx/socket size against OEM documentation. Once the retainers are released, carefully pull the airbag module straight back away from the steering wheel approximately 2-3 inches to access the wiring.ring wheel approximately 2-3 inches to access the wiring.

   Disconnect airbag harness connector
   Locate the yellow airbag harness connector on the back of the airbag module. This is a square yellow connector with a locking tab. Press the locking tab (usually red or yellow) and carefully pull the connector straight apart. Do NOT pull on wires. If connector is difficult to separate, use a small flathead screwdriver to assist with releasing the lock tab. This vehicle uses a 2-stage airbag, so there may be more than one yellow squib connector on the back of the module - disconnect all airbag connectors present. On 2007 models there may also be a separate horn wire connector - disconnect it as well if present (typically a separate single wire connector).

   Remove airbag module from vehicle
   Once all connectors are disconnected, carefully remove the airbag module from the steering wheel. Immediately place it on a clean, flat workbench surface with the trim cover (deployment side) facing UP. Never place airbag module face-down. Store in a safe location away from work area where it cannot be disturbed, dropped, or exposed to heat or electrical current.

   Inspect clockspring and wiring
   With airbag module removed, visually inspect the clockspring assembly (yellow component behind steering wheel) for any cracks, damage, or excessive wear. Inspect all visible wiring for fraying, melting, or damage. Verify steering wheel is still centered - the clockspring must remain centered to function properly. If clockspring shows damage, replacement is required before installing new airbag.

   Prepare new airbag module
   Remove new airbag module from packaging carefully. Inspect for any shipping damage. Verify part number matches old module and vehicle specifications. Keep module with trim side facing up at all times. Do not connect any wiring until module is positioned on steering wheel.

   Position new airbag module
   Hold new airbag module with deployment side facing you. Carefully route the clockspring connector through the opening in the back of the airbag module housing. Position the module approximately 2-3 inches away from the steering wheel hub, aligned with the mounting holes.

   Connect airbag harness
   Connect the yellow airbag harness connector by carefully aligning and pressing the two halves together until you hear and feel a positive click. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. If equipped with separate horn connector, connect it now. Gently tug on connectors to verify they are fully locked - they should not separate with light pulling.

   Install airbag module to steering wheel
   Carefully push the airbag module flush against the steering wheel hub, ensuring no wires are pinched between the module and steering wheel. Align the mounting holes on the module with the threaded holes in the steering wheel. Reinstall the airbag module using the correct OEM retention method. If the module uses spring-clip retention pins, press the module firmly into place until each clip audibly and positively latches. If screw-type fasteners are used, thread them by hand first, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (verify exact value in the factory service manual) in an alternating pattern to seat the module evenly. Do not over-torque as this may damage the module housing.

    Verify module installation
    Verify airbag module is flush and even all around the steering wheel with no gaps. Gently press around perimeter of module - it should not move or rattle. Ensure no wiring is visible and nothing is pinched. Replace any access hole plugs that were removed.

    Reconnect battery
    Exit vehicle and return to engine compartment. Reconnect positive battery cable(s) first, then negative battery cable(s). Note: this 5.9L Cummins truck is equipped with dual batteries - ensure all terminals are properly reconnected. Ensure connections are tight and corrosion-free. Close hood.

    Clear airbag system codes
    Connect OBD-II scan tool with airbag system capability. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Access airbag system module and clear any stored diagnostic trouble codes that were generated during module replacement. This step is essential for proper system operation.

Reassembly

1. No additional reassembly required beyond the installation steps above
2. Ensure all trim pieces and access hole covers are properly reinstalled
3. Verify steering wheel remains centered and functional

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Observe the airbag warning light on instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6-8 seconds during bulb check, then turn OFF
• If airbag light remains ON, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a system fault. Use scan tool to retrieve diagnostic codes and address before driving vehicle
• Start engine and verify airbag light remains OFF during operation
• Test horn operation to confirm horn circuit was properly reconnected (if applicable)
• Use scan tool to verify no active or pending airbag system fault codes are present
• Perform a careful test drive in a safe area and verify airbag light remains OFF during all driving conditions
• CRITICAL: If airbag warning light does not function as described, DO NOT drive vehicle until system is properly diagnosed and repaired by a qualified technician
