Airbag Module/Computer

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the airbag control module (ACM) located under the center console on a 2007 Ram 3500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable first, then positive battery cable
4. Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system backup power to discharge
5. Place battery cables where they cannot accidentally contact battery terminals
6. Document all diagnostic trouble codes using scan tool before beginning repair
7. Take photos of module connector orientations and mounting locations for reference

Procedure

   Remove center console components
   Move front seats fully forward for access. Remove cup holder insert by lifting straight up. Remove two screws at bottom of cup holder cavity. Remove gear shift knob by pulling upward firmly (manual) or prying shift bezel (automatic). Remove console trim panel by releasing retaining clips starting at rear and working forward.
   ⚠Trim clips break easily - use plastic trim tools and work slowly to avoid breaking tabs.

   Access airbag control module
   Remove center console forward section by removing four mounting bolts (two front, two rear). Carefully lift console upward and rearward, disconnecting any remaining electrical connectors for power outlets or switches. The airbag control module is mounted on the transmission tunnel under the console, typically on the driver side of centerline.
   ℹ️Support console to prevent strain on electrical connectors during removal.

   Locate and identify airbag module
   The airbag control module is a rectangular metal box approximately 4x6 inches, mounted with two or three bolts to the transmission tunnel. It will have a large multi-pin connector (typically yellow or orange) attached. Verify module location and connector type before proceeding. Ensure the negative battery cable has been disconnected and the system allowed to discharge per factory specification (minimum 2 minutes for this platform) before touching any airbag system components.

   Disconnect module electrical connector
   Locate the connector lock mechanism on the main airbag module connector (typically a sliding lock or tab). Release the lock by sliding or lifting as appropriate. Grasp connector body firmly and pull straight off the module pins. Do not pull on wires. If connector is difficult to remove, verify lock is fully released before applying additional force.
   ⚠Never use metal tools near connector pins - static discharge or short circuit can damage module.

   Remove airbag control module mounting bolts
   Remove the mounting bolts securing the airbag control module to the mounting bracket. Verify exact bolt count and head type (commonly Torx) against factory service information for this vehicle.    Remove airbag control module
   Carefully lift the airbag control module away from mounting bracket. Check for any additional ground wires or secondary connectors that may be attached. Handle module carefully - do not drop, strike, or expose to static electricity. Place removed module on clean, padded surface away from work area.

   Prepare new airbag control module
   Remove new airbag control module from protective packaging. Verify part number matches application and check for any visible damage. Handle only by edges and mounting points. Do not touch connector pins. If module requires pre-programming, this must be completed before installation per manufacturer instructions.
   ⚠️New airbag modules may arrive with protective shorting clips on connectors - do not remove until ready to install.

   Install new airbag control module
   Position new module in mounting bracket in same orientation as original. Align mounting holes and install mounting bolts finger-tight. Verify module is seated properly against mounting surface with no gaps or misalignment. If applicable, connect ground wire to module. Tighten mounting bolts firmly and evenly to the factory-specified torque for this vehicle (verify against factory service information); do not overtighten.

   Connect electrical connector
   Remove any protective shorting clips from new module connector if present. Inspect connector pins on module for damage or contamination. Align main electrical connector with module pins and push firmly until fully seated with audible click. Engage connector lock mechanism fully. Verify connector is secure by gently pulling on connector body (not wires).
   ⚠Ensure connector is fully locked - partial connection will cause system malfunction and diagnostic codes.

    Reinstall center console
    Route all wiring properly to avoid pinching. Reconnect any accessory electrical connectors that were disconnected. Position console assembly over transmission tunnel and align with mounting points. Install four console mounting bolts and tighten securely. Reinstall trim panels, shift knob/bezel, cup holder, and any remaining trim pieces in reverse order of removal.
    ⚠Verify no wires are pinched between console and body before fully tightening mounting bolts.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the positive battery cable(s) first, then the negative battery cable(s). Note: the 2007 Ram 3500 Cummins is equipped with dual batteries; ensure all cables are properly reconnected. Tighten battery terminals securely. Tighten battery terminals securely. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe airbag warning light - it should illuminate briefly for the factory-specified bulb check duration (approximately 6-8 seconds on this platform) then extinguish. If light stays on continuously or flashes, do not drive vehicle.
    ⚠️If airbag light does not function as described, airbag system is not operational. Vehicle is unsafe to drive until issue is resolved.

    Program and test airbag system
    Connect professional scan tool with airbag system capability. Access airbag control module and perform VIN programming/initialization procedure per scan tool manufacturer instructions. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes. Perform system self-test and verify no codes return. Test all airbag system functions including driver airbag, passenger airbag, side airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners as applicable.
    ⚠️Vehicle MUST NOT be driven until airbag system programming is complete and all diagnostic codes are cleared with no faults present.

Reassembly

1. Verify all console trim panels and components are properly secured
2. Ensure all electrical connections under console are properly connected and not pinched
3. Return seats to normal positions and verify full range of motion
4. Document all diagnostic procedures and programming steps performed

Verification

• Start engine and verify airbag warning light illuminates briefly then extinguishes
• Using scan tool, verify no active or pending airbag system diagnostic codes are present
• Verify airbag control module responds to scan tool communication requests
• Confirm all airbag system components (driver, passenger, side, curtain airbags) are recognized by control module
• Test drive vehicle and verify airbag warning light remains off during normal operation
• Perform final scan for codes after test drive - system should remain fault-free
• Provide customer with documentation showing airbag system has been properly programmed and tested
