Airbag - Side

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a side airbag (seat-mounted or door-mounted) on a 2007 Ram 3500, including proper disarming of the SRS system and deployment system verification.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake

   If side airbag is seat-mounted: Locate the seat back side panel on the outboard side of the front seat. Using trim removal tools, carefully pry the lower edge of the side panel trim to release the retaining clips. Work upward progressively to avoid breaking clips. For door-mounted airbags: Skip to step 2.

   The 2007 Ram 3500 uses seat-mounted side thorax airbags; door-mounted side airbags were not offered on this platform. Verify airbag location against factory documentation before proceeding — if seat-mounted, follow step 1 and disregard door-panel removal.

   Locate and identify airbag module connector
   Identify the side airbag connector. It will have a yellow or orange connector body (SRS system standard color coding). The connector will have a safety lock clip or sliding lock mechanism. Take a clear photo showing the connector orientation and any wire routing clips.

   Carefully release the connector lock mechanism. For sliding locks, push the red or yellow tab to the unlock position. For clip-type locks, squeeze the sides while pulling. Gently pull the connector halves straight apart - never twist or bend the connector. Verify the connector pins are not damaged.

   Remove airbag module mounting fasteners
   Locate the airbag module mounting fasteners.    Carefully extract the airbag module from its mounting location. If seat-mounted, it may be held by additional fabric or plastic clips within the seat upholstery. Work slowly to avoid tearing the seat cover. Once free, immediately place the module with the deployment surface facing UP on a clean, isolated surface away from the work area.

   Thoroughly inspect the mounting bracket for cracks, deformation, or damage. Check the wiring harness for any signs of damage, pinching, or insulation wear. Inspect the connector on the vehicle harness side for bent pins, corrosion, or damage. Replace any damaged components before proceeding.

   Install new airbag module
   Remove the new airbag module from its packaging. Keep the deployment surface facing UP at all times. Position the new module into the mounting location, ensuring all alignment tabs and wire routing matches the original installation. Verify no wires are pinched or kinked.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Install all mounting fasteners hand-tight first to verify proper alignment. Tighten the Torx mounting screws in a crossing pattern to ensure even seating of the module. Do not overtighten as this can damage the mounting brackets. Verify the module is secure and flush with the mounting surface.

    Connect airbag electrical connector
    Align the airbag connector halves and push them together firmly until you hear or feel a distinct click. Engage the safety lock mechanism completely - you should hear a secondary click or see the lock tab fully seated. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked and will not separate.

    Reinstall trim panels
    Route all wiring through the correct channels and secure with any original clips. Reinstall the seat side panel or door panel, ensuring all clips align with their mounting holes. Press firmly around all clip locations. Reinstall all Torx screws and verify the panel is flush and secure.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect the positive battery cable(s) first, then the negative battery cable(s), keeping clear of any airbag components while reconnecting.     Clear SRS fault codes and verify system
    Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Using an OBD-II scan tool with SRS capability, access the airbag control module. Clear all stored fault codes. Observe the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6-8 seconds during bulb check, then extinguish. If the light stays on or flashes, re-scan for codes and verify all connections.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are fully seated and all fasteners are installed
2. Check that seat operation is normal and no wiring is interfering with seat adjustments or reclining mechanisms
3. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the door or seat cavity
4. Verify the airbag warning light extinguishes after the bulb check period

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON and verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly then extinguishes completely
• Using an SRS-capable scan tool, verify no active or pending fault codes are present in the airbag system
• Physically inspect the repaired area to ensure proper trim fitment and no interference with seat operation
• Perform a road test and verify the airbag warning light does not illuminate during normal driving conditions
• Document the repair with date, mileage, and which airbag was replaced for vehicle service records
• If the airbag warning light remains illuminated or returns after clearing codes, re-inspect all connections and consult professional service immediately
