Combination Switch

Replacement of the combination switch (turn signal/wiper/hazard/cruise control stalk assembly) mounted on the steering column.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn steering wheel to center/straight ahead position
3. Turn ignition off and remove key
4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
5. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access

Procedure

   Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds
   Locate and remove the two Phillips screws at the bottom rear of the lower steering column shroud. Tilt the lower shroud downward and pull rearward to disengage clips. Remove the upper shroud by lifting upward at the front edge to release the retaining clips, then pull rearward to remove.

   Remove driver's knee bolster if needed for access
   If additional clearance is needed, remove the lower dashboard knee bolster panel by removing the Phillips screws (typically 3-4 screws) along the bottom edge. Gently pull the panel outward to release any remaining clips. Set aside with hardware.

   Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors
   Locate the two large electrical connectors on the left side of the combination switch assembly. Press the release tabs on each connector and pull straight away from the switch body. Note the connector positions and orientation before removal to ensure correct reconnection; verify connector functions against wiring documentation for this vehicle.

   Remove combination switch mounting screws
   Locate the screw(s) securing the combination switch to the steering column (verify exact quantity and driver type against the FSM for this vehicle). Remove the screw(s) completely and retain for reinstallation.

   Remove combination switch assembly from column
   With mounting screws removed, carefully pull the combination switch assembly straight away from the steering column. The switch may have a locating tab that fits into a slot on the column housing - angle slightly if needed to clear. Inspect the mounting surface on the column for debris or damage.

   Install new combination switch assembly
   Position the new combination switch assembly to the left side of the steering column, aligning the locating tab with the slot in the column housing. Ensure the switch body sits flush against the column before installing screws. Verify correct stalk orientation against the original switch and factory documentation before final installation.

   Install and tighten mounting screws
   Install the mounting screw(s) through the combination switch into the steering column (matching the type removed). Tighten screws evenly and firmly but do not overtighten the plastic housing. Verify the switch assembly does not rock or move when tugged gently.

   Reconnect electrical connectors
   Reconnect both electrical connectors to the combination switch, ensuring each connector clicks fully into place. Verify the locking tabs are engaged. Gently tug on each connector to confirm proper seating. Route harness to avoid interference with moving parts.

   Reinstall steering column shrouds
   Position the upper steering column shroud over the column, sliding it forward to engage the rear tabs. Press down at the front to snap the retaining clips into place. Install the lower shroud by inserting the front tabs, rotating upward, and installing the two Phillips screws at the rear. Tighten screws securely.

    Reinstall knee bolster if removed
    If the knee bolster was removed, align the panel with the dashboard opening and press firmly to engage any clips. Install the Phillips screws along the bottom edge and tighten securely.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect negative battery cable
2. Verify all steering column shroud panels are fully seated with no gaps
3. Ensure all electrical connectors are properly secured and routed away from moving parts

Verification

• Turn ignition to RUN position without starting engine
• Test turn signal operation in both left and right positions - verify dashboard indicators and exterior lights function
• Test hazard light function - all four turn signals should flash
• Test windshield wiper switch in all positions (intermittent, low, high) and verify operation
• Test windshield washer function
• Test cruise control set, resume, cancel, and coast functions (may require road test)
• Verify high beam/low beam switch operates correctly
• Check for any warning lights on instrument cluster related to airbag, stability control, or other systems
• If equipped with electronic stability control, a steering angle sensor relearn procedure may be required - turn steering wheel lock-to-lock twice with ignition on to complete relearn
