Dimmer Switch

Replace the dimmer switch (turn signal multifunction switch) on the steering column to restore headlight dimmer and/or turn signal functionality.

• Dimmer/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Mopar part or aftermarket equivalent for 2007 Ram 3500
• Steering column cover screws (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
4. Place steering wheel in centered, straight-ahead position
5. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access

Procedure

   Remove lower steering column covers
   Locate the upper and lower steering column covers. Remove the screws securing the lower cover (typically found at the bottom near the column bracket); verify screw type (commonly small hex-head or Torx) and count against the service manual before removal. Carefully separate the lower cover by pulling it away from the upper cover. You may need to tilt the cover slightly to clear the steering column shaft.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the fasteners securing the upper cover. Remove the Phillips or Torx screws (typically 2-3 screws). Lift the upper cover upward and over the steering wheel, being careful not to scratch the trim or damage the ignition lock cylinder housing.

   Locate and access the dimmer switch
   Identify the multifunction switch assembly mounted on the left side of the steering column. This is the lever-operated switch that controls turn signals and headlight high/low beam (dimmer); on this vehicle the windshield wiper/washer functions are usually a separate right-side stalk. Note the electrical connector routing and any wire retaining clips.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the electrical connector(s) attached to the multifunction switch. Press the locking tab(s) and carefully pull the connector(s) straight out from the switch. On some models, there may be one large connector or multiple smaller connectors. Note connector orientation for reassembly.

   Remove switch mounting fasteners
   Locate the mounting screws securing the multifunction switch to the steering column housing. Verify screw type and count against the service manual (commonly small Torx or self-tapping screws) and remove them, retaining for reinstallation. Remove both screws completely and retain for reinstallation.

   Remove dimmer switch assembly
   With the mounting screws removed, carefully slide the multifunction switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch should slide outward along the column axis. If resistance is felt, check for any remaining wire ties or retaining clips. Remove the old switch completely.

   Install new dimmer switch
   Position the new multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes with the threaded bosses on the column housing. Slide the switch fully onto the column until it seats properly against the housing. Ensure the switch lever is pointing in the correct direction and operates freely without binding.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Install the two mounting screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once both screws are started, tighten them securely but do not overtighten as the plastic housing can crack. Snug firmly by hand with the screwdriver.

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Align the electrical connector(s) with the switch terminal(s) and push firmly until you hear or feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Route any excess wiring neatly using existing clips or new wire ties.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position the upper steering column cover over the steering wheel and align it with the lower mounting points. Install the upper cover fasteners and tighten securely. Position the lower cover and snap it into place with the upper cover, then reinstall the lower cover screws (same type/count as removed) and tighten firmly without overtightening the plastic.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are securely fastened and properly aligned with no gaps
2. Verify no wires are pinched between covers or column components
3. Reconnect negative battery cable
4. Reset clock and radio presets if necessary

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates normally
• Test turn signal operation in both left and right positions, verify proper flashing and cancel function
• Test headlight dimmer function by toggling between high and low beams, verify operation and instrument cluster indicator
• Test hazard flasher function if integrated into the multifunction switch
• Verify windshield wiper function if integrated into the switch
• Test horn operation by pressing steering wheel horn button to ensure clockspring connection is intact
• Start engine and verify all functions work under load
• Check for any warning lights related to airbag system; if airbag light remains on after starting, recheck all connections and consult diagnostic procedures
