Door Lock Actuator - Front

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front door lock actuator on a 2007 Ram 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable to prevent accidental power window or lock operation
3. Allow at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect for airbag system to discharge
4. Open the door you are working on and ensure it remains open throughout the procedure
5. Gather all tools and new actuator before starting

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door pull handle screw cover and screw
   Locate the small plastic cover on the door pull handle. Use a flat blade screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry out the cover. Remove the Phillips head screw behind the cover that secures the door pull handle to the door panel.

   Remove interior door handle trim bezel
   Carefully pry out the door handle trim bezel surrounding the interior door release handle. This typically clips into place and can be removed by pulling gently from the rear edge. Disconnect any electrical connectors for door lock switches or courtesy lights if equipped.

   Remove door panel mounting screws
   Locate and remove all door panel mounting screws. Remove all door panel mounting screws, which may include Torx and/or Phillips fasteners located at the bottom of the panel, near the door pull area, and behind the door pull cup. Verify screw type and count against a service manual for your specific door. Check behind any trim pieces for hidden fasteners.

   Release door panel clips and remove panel
   Starting at the bottom rear corner, use a door panel clip removal tool or panel pry tool to release the plastic retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Work your way around the panel, releasing each clip. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill lip, then pull the panel away from the door.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors attached to the door panel, including power window switch, power mirror switch, and any other switches. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.

   Remove water shield access
   Carefully peel back the plastic water shield enough to access the door lock actuator. The actuator is located inside the door cavity near the latch assembly. Do not completely remove the water shield unless necessary; creating a working access hole is sufficient.

   Disconnect actuator electrical connector and linkage rods
   Using a work light, locate the door lock actuator. Disconnect the electrical connector from the actuator. Carefully disconnect the plastic or metal linkage rods from the actuator by unclipping them from their ball socket connections. Note the orientation and position of each linkage rod for reassembly.

   Remove actuator mounting fasteners
   Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the actuator to the door structure. The actuator is often integrated with the door latch assembly and secured with Torx fasteners accessed from the door edge or interior; verify the fastener type and size for your specific latch before removal. Support the actuator while removing the last fastener to prevent it from falling inside the door cavity.

   Extract old actuator from door
   Carefully maneuver the actuator out through the access hole in the door structure. This may require rotating or angling the actuator to clear internal door components. Be careful not to drop any mounting hardware inside the door.

    Install new actuator
    Position the new actuator into the door cavity and align it with the mounting holes. Install the mounting fasteners finger-tight first, then tighten securely using the correct driver for your latch's fastener type. Ensure the actuator is properly oriented with linkage connection points accessible.

    Reconnect linkage rods and electrical connector
    Reconnect all linkage rods to the new actuator, ensuring each rod snaps firmly into its ball socket connection. Verify the rods are fully seated and secure. Connect the electrical connector to the actuator until it clicks into place.

    Test actuator operation
    Reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily. Test the door lock operation using the key fob, interior lock switch, and manual lock lever to verify proper actuator function before reassembling the door panel. Check that all linkage rods move smoothly and the lock engages and disengages properly. Disconnect battery again for panel reinstallation.

Reassembly

1. Reposition and secure the water shield, ensuring a good seal to prevent water intrusion
2. Reconnect all electrical connectors to switches on the door panel
3. Position the door panel onto the door, engaging the top edge over the window sill lip first
4. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips
5. Reinstall all door panel mounting screws and tighten securely
6. Reinstall the interior door handle trim bezel
7. Reinstall the door pull handle screw and cover
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable

Verification

• Test door lock operation from key fob to verify remote locking and unlocking
• Test door lock switch on door panel to verify interior locking and unlocking
• Test door lock operation from driver's door master lock switch if working on passenger door
• Manually operate the interior door lock lever to verify mechanical linkage operation
• Listen for proper actuator motor sound without grinding or binding
• Verify door opens and closes properly and latches securely
• Check that all door panel clips are seated and panel is secure with no rattles
