Glove Box Latch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the glove box latch assembly on a 2007 Ram 3500, including striker alignment.

Preparation

1. Open the glove box door fully
2. Remove all contents from the glove box compartment
3. Ensure adequate lighting inside the passenger compartment

Procedure

1. 1

   Open glove box and locate latch mechanism
   Fully open the glove box door. The latch mechanism is integrated with the handle at the top center of the glove box door. The corresponding striker/catch is located at the top edge of the glove box opening in the instrument panel.

   Remove glove box door stop limiters
   Squeeze both sides of the glove box inward to release the side stops from the instrument panel. This allows the door to drop down fully, providing better access to the latch mounting screws.

   Remove latch assembly mounting screws
   Remove the fasteners securing the latch assembly to the inside of the glove box door (verify screw type and count against OEM documentation; some assemblies use snap-in clips rather than screws). The latch is typically mounted near the top center of the door. Support the latch as you remove the second screw to prevent it from falling.

   Remove latch assembly
   Carefully pull the latch assembly away from the glove box door. Note the position and orientation of the latch for installation of the replacement. If the latch release cable is connected, disconnect it by pressing the release tab and sliding the cable end from the latch mechanism.

   Inspect striker plate
   With the latch removed, inspect the striker plate mounted on the instrument panel. If the striker is damaged, worn, or misaligned, inspect its mounting; if it is a separate, serviceable part, remove its retaining fastener(s) and replace or reposition as needed. Note that on many Ram instrument panels the striker/catch is molded into the panel and is not separately serviceable.

   Install new latch assembly
   Position the new latch assembly in the same orientation as the original. If equipped with a release cable, connect it to the latch mechanism first by inserting the cable end and ensuring it clicks into place. Align the latch with the mounting holes on the glove box door.

   Secure latch with mounting screws
   Install the two Phillips screws through the latch assembly into the glove box door. Tighten screws snugly but do not overtighten, as the mounting points are plastic and can strip. Ensure the latch moves freely and the release mechanism operates smoothly.

   Test latch operation and adjust if needed
   Close the glove box door slowly and verify the latch engages the striker plate properly. The door should close securely without excessive force. If the latch does not engage properly and the striker is a serviceable, adjustable component, loosen its mounting fastener(s) and reposition as needed for proper engagement. If the striker is molded into the instrument panel, verify the latch assembly is fully seated and correctly oriented instead.

Reassembly

1. Ensure glove box door closes and latches securely without binding
2. Verify the release mechanism opens the door smoothly when activated
3. Return glove box contents to the compartment

Verification

• Close and open the glove box door several times to verify smooth operation
• Confirm the latch holds the door securely closed and does not rattle
• Test the release button or handle to ensure it disengages the latch properly
• Check that the glove box door aligns properly with the instrument panel when closed
