Headlight Bulb - Single

This procedure covers the replacement of a single headlight bulb on a 2007 Ram 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
2. Allow headlight bulbs to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated
3. Open and secure the hood

Procedure

1. 1

   Access headlight assembly
   Locate the headlight assembly at the front of the vehicle. On this model, access to the bulb is limited; you will typically need to remove the two upper headlight mounting fasteners and pull the headlight assembly forward to reach the bulb socket at the rear of the housing.

   Remove bulb dust cover
   Locate the dust cover/cap on the back of the headlight assembly. Depending on the design, either pull the cover straight off or rotate it to release it, then remove it to expose the bulb socket.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Press the release tab on the bulb electrical connector and pull straight back to disconnect it from the bulb. Set the connector aside where it will not contact hot engine components.

   Remove bulb retaining clip
   Locate the bulb retention mechanism. Depending on the design, either release the wire retaining clip by pressing it inward and swinging it aside, or rotate the bulb/socket counterclockwise to unlock it from the housing.

   Remove old bulb
   Carefully pull the old bulb straight out of the headlight housing socket. Avoid twisting or excessive force. Inspect the socket for any corrosion or damage before installing the new bulb.

   Install new bulb
   Using a clean cloth or while wearing clean gloves, handle the new H13 bulb only by its base. Align the bulb tabs with the slots in the socket and insert it into the housing, then secure it either by the wire clip or by rotating clockwise to lock, matching the original retention method until it seats fully. Ensure the bulb is oriented correctly with the locating tabs in their proper positions.

   Secure retaining clip
   Swing the wire retaining clip back over the bulb base and press down firmly until it clicks into its locked position. Verify the clip is fully engaged and holding the bulb securely in the socket.

   Reconnect electrical connector
   Push the electrical connector straight onto the bulb terminals until it clicks and locks into place. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is securely attached.
9. 9

   Reinstall dust cover
   Position the rubber dust cover over the back of the bulb socket, aligning any tabs or notches. Press it firmly into place and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it. Ensure the seal is complete to prevent moisture intrusion.

Reassembly

1. Close the hood securely
2. Dispose of the old bulb properly according to local regulations

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the on position and activate the headlights to verify the new bulb illuminates properly
• Test both low beam and high beam functions to ensure proper operation
• Check for proper headlight aim and adjust if necessary using the adjustment screws on the headlight assembly
