HID Ballast

Replace the HID headlight ballast module to restore proper headlight operation on your 2007 Ram 3500 with factory HID lighting system.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn headlights off and remove key from ignition
3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 5 minutes for HID system to fully discharge
5. Identify which ballast needs replacement (driver or passenger side) - ballasts are located behind headlight assemblies

Procedure

   Access the headlight assembly area
   From under the hood, locate the headlight assembly on the affected side. The ballast is mounted on a bracket behind the headlight housing. You may need to move nearby components (such as the air intake tubing or the coolant overflow reservoir) for better access, depending on your specific vehicle and any aftermarket HID kit installation. Inspect the area and remove only the fasteners necessary to gain clearance, keeping track of bolt sizes and count as you go.

   Locate the ballast module
   Identify the HID ballast module mounted to the bracket behind the headlight assembly. The ballast is a rectangular metal box approximately 4x3 inches with electrical connectors and a wire leading to the HID bulb. Note the orientation and mounting position for reinstallation.

   Disconnect the input power connector
   Locate the main input power connector on the ballast (this comes from the vehicle's wiring harness). Press the release tab and firmly pull the connector straight out from the ballast. The connector may be tight due to weatherpack seals - do not twist, pull straight out. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Disconnect the HID bulb connector
   Locate the high-voltage output connector that runs from the ballast to the HID bulb (typically a gray or black weatherproof connector). Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect. This connector carries high voltage when system is active, but should be safe after 5-minute wait period. Inspect the connector boot for cracks or damage.

   Remove ballast mounting fasteners
   Remove the mounting bolts securing the ballast to its bracket. The ballast is typically secured by two or three small bolts or screws, but the exact count and fastener size depend on your specific installation; note them during removal. Keep track of any washers or spacers. If bolts are severely corroded, apply penetrating oil and let sit for 5 minutes before removal. Inspect mounting bracket for damage or excessive corrosion.

   Remove the old ballast
   Carefully extract the ballast from its mounting location. You may need to tilt or rotate it slightly to clear surrounding components. Once removed, inspect the ballast for obvious signs of failure such as burn marks, melted plastic, or moisture intrusion. Check mounting bracket for any needed repairs.

   Prepare the new ballast
   Remove the new ballast from packaging, handling only by the edges to avoid static discharge damage. Compare with old ballast to verify correct replacement part. Inspect all connectors on new ballast for shipping damage. Do not remove protective caps from connectors until ready to install.

   Install the new ballast
   Position the new ballast in the mounting bracket, ensuring it sits flush and in the same orientation as the original. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern to ensure even pressure. Snug bolts firmly but do not overtighten - these thread into plastic or thin metal brackets.

   Connect the HID bulb output
   Connect the high-voltage output connector from the new ballast to the HID bulb. Push firmly until you hear or feel the locking tab click into place. Gently tug to verify secure connection. Ensure the weatherproof boot is fully seated to prevent moisture intrusion.

    Connect the input power connector
    Connect the main vehicle wiring harness connector to the input side of the new ballast. Align connector carefully and push straight in until the locking tab clicks. Verify secure connection with gentle pull. Route wiring to avoid contact with hot or moving components.

    Reinstall displaced components
    If you moved the air intake tube or coolant overflow reservoir, reinstall them to their original positions. Tighten air intake clamp securely. Reinstall coolant overflow reservoir with two 10mm bolts, ensuring it sits properly in mounting bracket and hoses are not kinked.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Turn on headlights and verify the repaired HID lamp ignites and warms up to full brightness within approximately 15-30 seconds. Test low and high beam functions. If lamp does not ignite, recheck all connections before condemning the new ballast. Some HID systems require a brief adaptation period.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
2. Verify no tools or parts were left in engine compartment
3. Confirm air intake and coolant reservoir (if disturbed) are properly secured
4. Check that wiring is routed away from hot exhaust components and moving parts

Verification

• Start engine and verify both headlights illuminate properly in low beam mode
• Test high beam function - both lamps should illuminate brightly
• Verify HID lamp color and brightness matches the opposite side
• Check for any error codes or dash warning lights related to headlight system
• After dark, verify proper beam pattern and aim - HID lamp should reach full brightness within 15 seconds
• Inspect repair area after 24 hours of operation for any signs of overheating or connector issues
