Radio/Head Unit

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the factory radio/head unit in a 2007 Ram 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

• Replacement radio/head unit × 1 — Aftermarket or OEM replacement compatible with 2007 Ram 3500
• Radio wiring harness adapter (if using aftermarket) × 1 — Matches vehicle and aftermarket radio connectors
• Antenna adapter (if using aftermarket) × 1 — Factory to aftermarket antenna connection
• Radio dash kit (if using aftermarket) × 1 — Single or double DIN kit for 2007 Ram

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
4. Gather all replacement components and verify compatibility with vehicle
5. If installing aftermarket radio, prepare wiring harness adapter and dash kit according to manufacturer instructions

Procedure

   Remove center bezel trim panel
   Starting at the bottom of the center bezel around the radio and climate controls, carefully insert a panel removal tool between the bezel and dashboard. Gently pry outward to release the retaining clips. Work your way around the perimeter of the bezel, releasing all clips. The bezel covers the radio, climate controls, and accessory switches. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel forward and away from the dash.

   Disconnect bezel electrical connections
   With the bezel pulled forward, locate the electrical connectors on the back for any switches or controls integrated into the bezel. Press the locking tabs and disconnect any electrical connectors. Set the bezel aside in a safe location to avoid scratching.

   Remove radio mounting screws
   Locate the mounting screws securing the radio to the dash mounting bracket. These are typically 7mm hex head screws. Remove all screws and keep them in a safe location for reinstallation.

   Pull radio from dash
   Carefully pull the radio unit straight out from the dashboard opening. Pull it out far enough to access the wiring connections on the back, approximately 6-8 inches. Support the radio with one hand while accessing the connectors.

   Disconnect radio wiring harness
   Locate the main wiring harness connector on the back of the radio. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out from the radio. Note the orientation and routing of the harness for reinstallation.

   Disconnect antenna cable
   Locate the antenna cable connection on the back of the radio. Grasp the connector (not the cable) and pull straight out to disconnect. The connector may require a slight twisting motion while pulling.

   Remove factory radio
   With all connections disconnected, completely remove the factory radio from the vehicle. Inspect the dash opening and mounting bracket for any damage or debris.

   Prepare new radio for installation
   If installing an aftermarket radio, attach the wiring harness adapter to the new radio according to the adapter manufacturer instructions. Install the dash kit mounting brackets to the new radio if required. Connect the antenna adapter if needed. If installing OEM replacement, verify all mounting points align with factory locations.

   Connect new radio wiring
   Position the new radio near the dash opening. Connect the wiring harness adapter (or factory harness if using OEM radio) to the vehicle harness. Ensure the connector locks fully into place. Connect the antenna cable to the new radio, pushing firmly until it clicks or seats completely.

    Test radio operation before final installation
    With the SRS/airbag connectors undisturbed and personnel clear of any airbag deployment zone, reconnect the negative battery cable temporarily. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position and verify the radio powers on, displays correctly, and audio functions properly. Test AM/FM reception and CD player if applicable. Check that all speakers are functioning. Once verified, turn off ignition and disconnect negative battery cable again for final installation.

    Install and secure new radio
    Carefully route all wiring behind the radio to avoid pinching. Slide the new radio into the dash opening, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Install the four mounting screws and tighten securely, but do not overtighten as this may crack the radio housing or dash bracket.

    Reinstall center bezel
    Reconnect any electrical connectors to the back of the center bezel for switches or controls. Position the bezel over the radio and dash opening, aligning all mounting points. Starting at one side, press firmly on the bezel to engage the retaining clips. Work around the perimeter, pressing until all clips click into place and the bezel is flush with the dashboard.

Reassembly

1. Reconnect negative battery cable and tighten securely
2. Verify all dashboard trim panels are properly seated and aligned
3. Check that no gaps exist between the bezel and dashboard
4. If equipped with power windows, perform the auto-up/down relearn procedure by rolling each window fully down, then fully up and holding the switch for 2 seconds

Verification

• Turn ignition to ACC position and verify radio powers on and displays correctly
• Test all radio functions including AM/FM tuner, seek functions, and preset buttons
• Verify audio output from all speakers at various volume levels
• Test CD player or auxiliary input if equipped
• Check that climate control and other dashboard functions operate normally
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
• Confirm all dashboard trim panels are secure with no rattles or loose clips
