Seat Belt

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a seat belt assembly (retractor, buckle, and/or anchor) on a 2007 Ram 3500.

• Seat belt assembly (retractor, buckle, or anchor as needed) × 1 — Use OEM specification - specify front/rear and driver/passenger side
• Seat belt mounting bolts (if corroded or damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Identify which seat belt assembly requires replacement (driver, passenger, rear seat position)
2. Move the seat fully forward or rearward to access mounting points as needed
3. Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the parking brake engaged
4. Disconnect the negative battery cable if replacing a seat belt with a pretensioner

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove B-pillar or C-pillar trim panel
   For front seat belts, carefully pry off the B-pillar lower trim panel using trim removal tools. Start at the bottom and work upward, releasing the retaining clips. For rear seat belts, remove the appropriate C-pillar trim panel. The retractor is typically mounted behind this panel.

   Remove upper seat belt anchor bolt
   Locate the upper seat belt anchor bolt at the top of the B-pillar or C-pillar. Use the appropriate socket or driver to remove the anchor bolt (this fastener is commonly a hex-head bolt on this platform — verify the correct size before applying force). Support the seat belt webbing to prevent it from falling into the pillar cavity.
   ℹ️Note the orientation and position of any spacers or washers on the anchor bolt for proper reinstallation.

   Remove seat belt retractor mounting bolts
   Locate the seat belt retractor assembly mounted to the lower B-pillar or floor. Remove the mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts) securing the retractor to the body structure. For some configurations, you may need to fold the seat forward to access floor-mounted retractors.

   Disconnect pretensioner connector (if equipped)
   If the seat belt is equipped with a pretensioner (common on front seats), locate the electrical connector at the retractor. Press the connector locking tab and disconnect the wiring harness. Route the connector through any retention clips.
   ⚠Pretensioners are pyrotechnic devices. Handle with care and do not expose to heat or impact. Follow all local regulations for disposal.

   Remove seat belt buckle assembly
   Locate the seat belt buckle mounting bolt on the inboard side of the seat, typically between the seat cushion and center console. Remove the bolt securing the buckle to the floor or seat frame (verify whether this is a Torx or hex-head fastener and its size before applying force). Pull the buckle and cable assembly free.

   Remove complete seat belt assembly
   Carefully extract the entire seat belt assembly from the vehicle, routing the webbing through the seat opening and pillar trim openings. Inspect all mounting points for damage or corrosion that may require repair before installing the new belt.

   Install new seat belt retractor
   Position the new seat belt retractor in the mounting location. Ensure any alignment pins or tabs are properly seated. Install the retractor mounting bolts and tighten to the manufacturer's specification. Do not guess — verify the exact torque value in the factory service manual for this vehicle, as seat belt anchor hardware torque is safety-critical.

   Connect pretensioner wiring (if equipped)
   Route the pretensioner wiring harness connector through any retention clips. Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle harness, ensuring it locks securely. Verify the connection is seated fully.

   Install upper seat belt anchor
   Route the seat belt webbing through the seat opening and up through the pillar. Install any spacers or washers in their original positions. Thread the upper anchor bolt through the seat belt and into the pillar mounting point. Tighten to the manufacturer's specification. Verify the exact torque value in the factory service manual, as seat belt anchor torque is safety-critical and must not be estimated.

    Install seat belt buckle
    Route the buckle cable through the seat opening. Position the buckle mounting bracket on the floor or seat frame mounting point. Ensure proper orientation (buckle release button facing outward). Install and tighten the mounting bolt to the manufacturer's specification as listed in the factory service manual.

    Reinstall trim panels
    Verify all seat belt webbing is properly routed and not twisted. Reinstall the B-pillar or C-pillar trim panels, ensuring all retaining clips are fully seated. Press firmly around all edges to secure the panel.

    Reconnect battery and clear codes
    If the battery was disconnected, reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the vehicle and verify no airbag or restraint system warning lights remain illuminated. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes related to the seat belt pretensioner if applicable using a scan tool.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all seat belt webbing moves freely through guides and retracts smoothly without binding
2. Verify all mounting bolts are torqued to specification and seat belt anchors are secure
3. Confirm trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or loose clips
4. Test seat belt latch and release mechanism for proper operation

Verification

• Pull seat belt webbing fully extended and verify smooth retraction
• Insert buckle tongue into latch and confirm positive engagement with audible click
• Test buckle release button for proper operation
• Pull firmly on latched seat belt to verify anchor points are secure
• Verify airbag/SRS warning light is not illuminated on instrument cluster
• If equipped with pretensioner, use scan tool to verify no active fault codes in restraint system
