Seat Foam

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of worn or damaged seat foam in the front seats of a 2007 Ram 3500, requiring seat removal and upholstery disassembly.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes if seats have side airbags
3. Move seat to full forward position for rear bolt access, then full rearward for front bolt access
4. Prepare a clean work area for seat disassembly with adequate lighting
5. Take reference photos of seat from multiple angles before disassembly

Procedure

   Remove seat track mounting bolts
   Move seat to full forward position. Locate the two rear seat track mounting bolts and remove them using appropriate socket (verify actual size on your vehicle; commonly 15mm or 18mm). Move seat to full rearward position and remove the two front seat track mounting bolts. On seats with any wiring (power adjustment, heated seats, side airbags, or occupant sensors), label and disconnect all electrical connectors under the seat before removing completely.

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Carefully lift seat assembly out of vehicle. Seats are heavy (50-80 lbs depending on options), so use proper lifting technique or get assistance. Place seat upside down on clean work surface with protective covering to avoid scratching trim pieces.

   Remove seat back plastic covers
   Locate plastic trim covers on the back of the seat. Remove any visible screws or clips securing the rear seat back panel. Carefully pry off plastic trim pieces using flathead screwdriver wrapped in cloth to avoid scratching. Set aside all fasteners in labeled containers.

   Disconnect headrest and remove seat back
   Press headrest release buttons and remove headrest. Locate the seat back hinge bolts or mechanisms at the base of the seat back. Remove bolts or release clips securing seat back to seat base (verify fastener type and size on your vehicle before selecting a tool). Carefully separate seat back from seat base assembly.

   Release upholstery hog rings on seat base
   With seat base upside down, locate hog rings securing upholstery to seat frame around the perimeter. Use hog ring pliers to carefully squeeze and remove each hog ring. Work systematically around the entire seat base, keeping track of hog ring locations. Note that some areas may use plastic clips instead of hog rings.

   Remove seat base upholstery and foam
   Carefully peel back upholstery from seat base foam. Check for any additional attachment points such as Velcro strips or plastic clips. Once all attachments are released, remove the upholstery completely. Remove old foam from seat base frame, noting how it was positioned and any mounting tabs or slots.

   Remove seat back upholstery and foam
   Repeat hog ring removal process on seat back. Release all hog rings and clips securing upholstery to seat back frame. Carefully remove upholstery, being extra cautious around side airbag areas if equipped (do not damage airbag or sensors). Remove old foam from seat back frame.

   Clean seat frame and inspect components
   Vacuum seat frame to remove debris and old foam particles. Inspect seat frame for damage, cracks, or broken welds. Check seat adjustment mechanisms for proper operation. Inspect side airbag (if equipped) for any damage. Clean any dirt or debris from upholstery interior surface.

   Install new seat base foam
   Position new foam onto seat base frame, aligning any mounting tabs or slots with corresponding features on frame. Ensure foam is correctly oriented with thicker bolster areas in proper locations. Verify foam sits flat and even on frame without bunching or gaps.

    Install new seat back foam
    Position new foam onto seat back frame, aligning with frame contours. If seat has side airbags, ensure foam has proper cutout or accommodation for airbag module. Verify foam positioning matches original installation from reference photos.

    Reinstall seat base upholstery
    Position upholstery over new foam, aligning seams and ensuring proper fit. Starting at one corner, use hog ring pliers to install new hog rings (or reuse original if in good condition) to secure upholstery to frame. Work systematically around perimeter, pulling upholstery taut but not overstretched. Ensure even tension and no wrinkles. Reconnect any Velcro strips or plastic clips.

    Reinstall seat back upholstery
    Position upholstery over seat back foam, being careful around side airbag area if equipped. Install hog rings around perimeter, maintaining even tension. Ensure all seams are properly aligned and upholstery fits smoothly without bunching. Verify side airbag area is properly finished with no interference.

    Reassemble seat components
    Reattach seat back to seat base using previously removed bolts or clips. Tighten fasteners securely but do not overtighten. Reinstall all plastic trim covers and panels on seat back, ensuring all clips engage properly. Reinstall headrest by pressing firmly into receivers until it clicks.

    Reinstall seat in vehicle
    Carefully lift seat and position it over seat track mounting points in vehicle. On power seats, reconnect electrical connectors matching your labels. Align seat tracks with mounting holes. Install and hand-tighten all four seat track mounting bolts, then tighten in cross pattern to ensure even seating. Verify bolts are fully tight.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect negative battery cable. Test all seat adjustments (manual or power) to ensure proper operation. On power seats, verify all movement directions work correctly. Check that seat locks securely in all positions. Test headrest for secure fit and release function.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all hog rings are properly closed with no sharp edges that could snag clothing or damage upholstery over time
2. Verify seat back recline mechanism operates smoothly through full range of motion
3. Check that all plastic trim panels are securely clipped in place with no loose edges
4. Confirm seat track bolts are fully tightened and seat does not move when pushed forward/back with force
5. If equipped with heated seats, verify heating elements were not damaged during foam replacement by testing function

Verification

• Sit in seat and check for proper comfort and support with no unusual hard spots or gaps in foam
• Move seat through full range of adjustment to verify no binding or interference
• Verify no unusual noises from seat during adjustment or when entering/exiting vehicle
• Check that upholstery is smooth with no wrinkles, bunching, or loose areas
• Confirm all electrical functions work if equipped (power adjustment, heating, memory settings)
• Verify side airbag warning light does not illuminate if seat is equipped with side airbags
