Seat Heater Element

Replace the faulty seat heater element in the driver or passenger seat by removing the seat cover, replacing the heating pad, and reassembling the seat upholstery.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
3. Move seat to full forward position for rear bolt access, then full rearward for front bolt access
4. Identify which seat (driver or passenger) has the faulty heater element
5. Test the heater element with a multimeter to confirm failure before disassembly

Procedure

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Slide seat fully forward and locate the two rear seat mounting fasteners (verify head type — Ram trucks commonly use T50 Torx or 15mm hex). Remove both rear fasteners. Slide seat fully rearward and remove the two front seat mounting fasteners. Disconnect the seat wiring harness connector under the seat. Disconnect the seat heater connector if accessible at this stage. Carefully lift the seat assembly out of the vehicle.

   Remove seat back from seat base
   Place seat on a clean work surface with adequate lighting. Locate the four bolts (13mm) securing the seat back to the seat base hinge mechanism. Remove all four bolts and carefully separate the seat back from the base. Set the seat back aside if only replacing the base heater element, or continue working on the seat back if replacing that element.

   Remove plastic seat back panel
   If working on seat back heater element, locate the plastic panel on the rear of the seat back. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry out the retaining clips securing the panel. Remove the panel to access the seat cover attachment points and wiring. Disconnect any wiring clips attached to the panel.

   Release seat cover hog rings
   Locate all hog rings securing the seat cover to the seat frame around the perimeter. Use hog ring pliers to carefully compress and remove each hog ring. Count and note the number and location of hog rings for reassembly. Work methodically around the entire perimeter of the seat cushion or seat back. Some rings may be located underneath the seat base frame.

   Remove seat cover and foam
   Once all hog rings are removed, carefully peel back the seat cover from the foam cushion. Work slowly to avoid tearing the cover. On some models, the cover may have additional plastic clips or J-channels that need to be released. Remove the foam cushion to access the heater element underneath. Note the orientation of the foam for reinstallation.

   Disconnect and remove old heater element
   Locate the heater element electrical connector and disconnect it from the wiring harness. The heater element is typically a thin heating pad adhered or sewn to the seat foam or attached to the seat frame. Carefully peel or cut away the old heater element. If the element is sewn in place, carefully cut the stitching without damaging the seat cover. Note the routing of the wiring and the position of the element.

   Test new heater element
   Before installation, use a multimeter to verify the new heater element has continuity and a low resistance consistent with the OEM specification. Compare readings to the old element if possible. Compare readings to the old element if possible. Inspect the new element for any visible damage or defects.

   Install new heater element
   Position the new heater element in the same location as the old one, ensuring it sits flat without wrinkles or folds. If the element has adhesive backing, carefully remove the protective film and press firmly into place on the seat foam or frame. If using a sewn-in style element, ensure it is properly positioned before reinstalling the cover. Route the wiring harness through the same path as the original.

   Reinstall foam and seat cover
   Place the foam cushion back onto the seat frame in the correct orientation. Begin stretching the seat cover back over the foam, working from one side to the other. Ensure the cover is properly aligned and centered before securing. Make sure all fabric channels and contours match the original configuration.

    Secure seat cover with hog rings
    Using hog ring pliers, install new hog rings in the same locations as the originals. Start at corners and work toward the middle of each side. Ensure the fabric is evenly tensioned without excessive pulling that could cause premature wear. The cover should fit snugly without wrinkles or loose areas. Install all hog rings securely.

    Reconnect wiring and test element
    Connect the heater element wiring to the seat wiring harness. Ensure all connectors are fully seated and locked. Before final reassembly, reconnect the vehicle battery and turn the ignition to ON. Test the seat heater function on all heat settings to verify proper operation. Use a non-contact thermometer or hand to confirm the seat is warming up. Disconnect battery again before continuing.

    Reinstall seat back and plastic panels
    If seat back was removed, align the seat back with the seat base hinge mechanism and install the four mounting bolts (13mm). Tighten bolts evenly. Reinstall any plastic trim panels on the rear of the seat back, ensuring all clips are fully seated.

    Reinstall seat in vehicle
    Carefully lift the seat assembly and position it over the mounting points in the vehicle. Connect all wiring harnesses under the seat, including the seat heater connector and main seat connector. Ensure no wires are pinched or stretched. Install the four seat mounting bolts (15mm) and tighten securely. Verify the seat slides and reclines properly.

Reassembly

1. Tighten all seat mounting bolts securely to ensure proper crash safety performance
2. Verify all wiring connectors are fully seated and locked to prevent intermittent electrical issues
3. Ensure hog rings are properly installed with no sharp edges exposed that could damage the seat cover
4. Check that seat cover is evenly tensioned without wrinkles or excessive pulling

Verification

• Reconnect the negative battery cable
• Start the vehicle and turn on the seat heater to each setting (low, medium, high if equipped)
• Allow 3-5 minutes for the seat to warm up and verify even heat distribution across the seating surface
• Check for any burning smell or unusual odors that might indicate a short circuit
• Verify the seat heater indicator light functions correctly on the switch
• Ensure no airbag warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard
• Test seat adjustment functions to verify no wiring was pinched during installation
• Visually inspect seat cover for proper fit and tension with no visible defects
