Shifter Boot

Replace the worn or torn shifter boot to restore a clean interior appearance and prevent dust and debris entry into the transmission linkage area.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Place transmission in PARK (automatic) or neutral (manual)
3. Allow interior to cool if vehicle was recently driven in hot weather
4. Gather replacement shifter boot and verify it matches your transmission type

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove shift knob (Manual transmission)
   For manual transmission: Firmly grip the shift knob and unthread it counterclockwise. Some models may have a set screw at the base that must be loosened first. For automatic transmission: Skip to step 2.

   Access shifter boot bezel
   Locate the plastic bezel or trim ring surrounding the shifter boot at the console. This bezel may be secured with clips or screws depending on trim level.

   Remove shifter bezel
   Using a trim panel removal tool or flat head screwdriver (wrapped in cloth to prevent scratching), carefully pry up the shifter bezel starting from the rear edge. Work around the perimeter to release all clips. Note: the 2007 Ram 3500 automatic transmission typically uses a column-mounted shifter with no floor shifter boot. Verify whether your vehicle has a floor shifter before proceeding; if column-shifted, this procedure does not apply.

   Disconnect shift indicator cable (Automatic only)
   For automatic transmissions on the 2007 Ram 3500, the shift indicator is located in the instrument cluster and driven from the steering column shifter, not a floor shifter cable. Skip this step unless your vehicle is confirmed to have a floor-mounted automatic shifter with a cable indicator.

   Remove old shifter boot
   The shifter boot is typically secured to the console base with a retaining ring or clips. Identify the attachment method: if using a retaining ring, twist counterclockwise and lift off. If using clips, carefully release them with a flat head screwdriver. Pull the old boot upward and off the shifter.

   Clean mounting area
   Clean the shifter boot mounting area on the console and the shifter shaft itself. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive residue. Inspect the shifter mechanism for any visible damage or excessive wear.

   Install new shifter boot
   Slide the new shifter boot over the shifter shaft from the top, ensuring it is oriented correctly with any stitching or seams positioned as desired. Pull the boot down fully until it seats properly at the base.

   Secure boot to console
   Attach the lower edge of the boot to the console base using the retaining ring (twist clockwise until tight) or press the boot edges into the mounting clips until fully seated. Ensure the boot is stretched evenly without wrinkles or bunching.

   Reinstall shifter bezel
   Position the shifter bezel over the shifter boot and align it with the console opening. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all mounting clips. On automatic transmissions, ensure the shift indicator window is properly aligned.

    Reconnect shift indicator cable (Automatic only)
    For automatic transmissions on the 2007 Ram 3500, no floor shifter indicator cable is used; the PRNDL indicator is in the instrument cluster. Skip this step unless your vehicle has a confirmed floor-mounted automatic shifter.

    Reinstall shift knob (Manual transmission)
    For manual transmission: Thread the shift knob clockwise onto the shifter shaft until tight. If equipped with a set screw, tighten it securely. Ensure the knob is oriented correctly and does not wobble.

Reassembly

1. Verify shifter boot is properly seated with no gaps or loose areas
2. Confirm all trim pieces and bezels are securely clipped in place
3. Test shift knob (if applicable) to ensure it is tight and secure

Verification

• Cycle through all gear positions to ensure smooth operation without interference from the new boot
• For automatic transmissions, verify the shift position indicator correctly displays P-R-N-D-3-2-1 positions
• Inspect the installed boot for proper fit with no wrinkles, gaps, or loose mounting
• Check that the shifter bezel is flush with the console and all clips are engaged
• Test drive vehicle briefly to confirm normal shifting operation
