Shifter Knob

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the shifter knob on a 2007 Ram 3500 with either automatic or manual transmission.

Preparation

1. Park the vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Place transmission in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual)
3. Turn ignition off and remove key

Procedure

1. 1

   Identify shifter knob attachment method
   Examine the shifter knob to determine how it is attached. Most 2007 Ram 3500 shifter knobs either thread directly onto the shifter shaft or have a set screw on the side or bottom. Automatic transmission knobs typically have a button mechanism for the overdrive function that may need to be disconnected.

   Remove overdrive button wiring (automatic only)
   If equipped with an automatic transmission and the shifter knob has an overdrive button, inspect the knob and handle to determine how the button assembly and any wiring are routed before removal. If a decorative cap or trim ring is present at the base, carefully pry it up using a trim tool, then disconnect any wiring connector by pressing the release tab and pulling apart. Verify the exact routing against the factory service manual for this vehicle.
   ⚠Be gentle when prying trim pieces to avoid breaking plastic clips or scratching interior surfaces.

   Locate and remove set screw (if applicable)
   Check the sides and bottom of the shifter knob for a small Allen head set screw. If present, determine the correct Allen wrench size by testing fitment before applying force. If present, use the appropriate Allen wrench to loosen the set screw completely. You do not need to remove it entirely, just loosen it enough to release the grip on the shifter shaft.

   Remove threaded shifter knob
   If the knob threads onto the shifter shaft (most common on manual transmissions and some automatics), firmly grasp the knob and rotate it counterclockwise to unthread it. Apply steady pressure and continue rotating until the knob is completely removed from the shaft. Some knobs may have a locking collar underneath that needs to be loosened first.

   Remove clip-on shifter knob (if applicable)
   If the knob uses a clip retention system, look for a plastic retaining clip at the base of the knob. Use needle-nose pliers or a flathead screwdriver to compress or pry the clip, then pull the knob straight up off the shifter shaft with firm, even pressure.

   Clean shifter shaft threads
   With the old knob removed, inspect the shifter shaft threads or mounting surface. Clean away any dirt, old thread-locking compound, or debris using a clean cloth. For threaded shafts, ensure threads are clean and undamaged.

   Install new shifter knob
   Install the new shifter knob using the reverse of the removal method. For threaded knobs, thread clockwise onto the shaft until snug and properly positioned. For set screw types, slide the knob onto the shaft to the desired height and tighten the set screw securely. For clip-on types, align and push firmly until the clip engages with an audible click.

   Reconnect overdrive wiring (automatic only)
   If the shifter has an overdrive button, reconnect the wiring connector by aligning the tabs and pressing together until it clicks. Ensure the wire is not pinched and has adequate slack for shifter movement. Reinstall any trim rings or decorative caps removed earlier.

Reassembly

1. Ensure the shifter knob is securely attached and positioned at the correct height for comfortable operation
2. Verify all trim pieces and caps are reinstalled properly
3. Check that wiring (if applicable) is properly routed and not interfering with shifter movement

Verification

• Test the shifter through all gear positions to ensure smooth operation and proper knob attachment
• Verify the overdrive button functions correctly (automatic transmission)
• Confirm the knob does not rotate or slide on the shaft during normal shifting operation
• Check that all gear positions can be selected and the shift pattern feels normal
