Transmission Control Module

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on a 2007 Ram 3500 with the 48RE automatic transmission and 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
2. Turn ignition off and remove key
3. If equipped with an aftermarket scan tool, retrieve and document all stored diagnostic trouble codes
4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
5. Ensure transmission is cool to avoid discomfort when working near transmission tunnel

Procedure

   Access driver side interior
   Open the driver door fully. The TCM on the 48RE is located in the engine compartment, typically mounted to the driver-side inner fender or firewall. Open the hood and locate the module before beginning work. Adjust the driver seat fully rearward to provide working room.

   Remove lower kick panel trim
   No interior trim removal is required. The TCM is accessed from the engine compartment. Ensure the area around the module is clear and clean before removal.

   Locate the TCM
   With the kick panel removed, identify the TCM mounted vertically to the body structure or dash support bracket. It is a rectangular silver or black metal box approximately 6x4 inches with a large multi-pin connector on one side. The TCM may have a metal bracket securing it to the body. Use a work light to clearly see the mounting configuration.

   Disconnect TCM electrical connector
   Locate the large electrical connector on the TCM. Press down or squeeze the locking tab on the connector (typically a red or gray secondary lock must be moved first). Firmly pull the connector straight away from the TCM. Do not twist or rock excessively. If the connector is difficult to remove, inspect for additional locking mechanisms. Note the condition of the connector O-ring seal for replacement.

   Remove TCM mounting fasteners
   Locate the TCM mounting bolts or screws, typically 2-4 fasteners securing the module to the mounting bracket. Confirm the mounting fastener type and size against service documentation before removal; retain all fasteners for reinstallation. Remove all mounting fasteners and retain them for reinstallation. Support the TCM with one hand as you remove the final fastener.

   Remove TCM from vehicle
   Carefully slide the TCM off its mounting bracket and remove it from the vehicle. Take care not to drop the module. Inspect the mounting bracket and surrounding area for any corrosion, debris, or moisture that could affect the new module. Clean the mounting surface if necessary.

   Inspect and prepare connector
   Examine the TCM wiring harness connector for any signs of corrosion, bent pins, or damage. If the connector O-ring seal appears damaged, dried out, or missing, replace it with the new seal. If desired, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal and housing (not directly on the metal pin contacts) to help prevent corrosion.

   Install new TCM
   Position the new TCM onto the mounting bracket, aligning it with the original mounting holes. Thread in all mounting fasteners by hand first to ensure proper alignment, then tighten them evenly in a crossing pattern. Ensure the TCM is firmly secured and not loose on its mount.

   Reconnect TCM electrical connector
   Align the electrical connector with the TCM socket and push it firmly until you hear or feel it click into place. Ensure any secondary locking mechanism is engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked. Do not force the connector if it does not easily engage; verify proper alignment.

    Reinstall kick panel trim
    Position the lower kick panel trim back into place, ensuring all alignment tabs and clips are properly located. Press firmly around all clip locations to fully seat the panel. Reinstall any screws removed earlier and tighten securely but do not overtighten plastic fasteners.

    Reconnect battery and clear adaptives
    Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten securely. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten securely. The replacement TCM must be programmed with the correct calibration and vehicle VIN using a dealer or professional scan tool before the transmission will operate correctly; key cycling alone will not initialize the module.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all interior trim panels are securely fastened and properly aligned
2. Verify the electrical connector is fully locked and seated on the TCM
3. Return driver seat to normal position

Verification

• Start the engine and verify the transmission engages in all gear ranges (Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and manual shift modes if equipped)
• Check for any new diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool; address any communication or circuit errors immediately
• Test drive the vehicle and monitor shift quality; shifts may be firm or delayed initially as the TCM relearns adaptive values
• Verify the overdrive on/off switch functions properly if equipped
• Have the TCM programmed to the vehicle VIN at a dealer or with appropriate professional scan tool to ensure full functionality and adaptive learning capability
• After 20-50 miles of varied driving, shift quality should normalize as the TCM completes its learning cycle
