TPMS Relearn

This procedure relearns the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensors after tire rotation, sensor replacement, or when the TPMS warning light is illuminated due to sensor location confusion.

Preparation

1. Verify all four tires are inflated to the door jamb placard pressure specification (typically 60-80 PSI front and rear for 3500 series, check driver door jamb sticker for exact values)
2. Ensure the vehicle has been stationary for at least 2 minutes with the ignition off
3. Confirm all TPMS sensors have fresh batteries and are functioning (sensors typically last 7-10 years)
4. Have the TPMS sensor IDs available if performing a manual relearn with a scan tool

Procedure

1. 1

   Initial System Check
   Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Verify the TPMS warning light illuminates briefly during the bulb check, then observe if it remains illuminated or flashes, indicating a TPMS fault that needs relearning.

   Connect Scan Tool
   Connect the TPMS scan tool or OBD-II scan tool with TPMS capability to the vehicle's diagnostic port located under the driver side of the dashboard. Turn ignition to ON position. Navigate to the TPMS function menu on the scan tool.

   Activate Left Front Sensor
   Position the TPMS tool against the tire sidewall near the valve stem of the left front tire. Activate the sensor using the TPMS tool. The sensor will transmit its ID to the tool. The vehicle may sound a horn chirp or the scan tool will confirm reception. Record or allow the tool to record the sensor ID.

   Activate Right Front Sensor
   Move to the right front tire and repeat the activation process. Position the TPMS tool near the valve stem, activate the sensor, and wait for confirmation via horn chirp or scan tool display.

   Activate Right Rear Sensor
   Move to the right rear tire and activate the TPMS sensor using the same method. Ensure the tool confirms successful sensor activation and ID capture.

   Activate Left Rear Sensor
   Move to the left rear tire and complete the activation sequence. This is the final sensor in the relearn pattern for 4-wheel TPMS systems on the 2007 Ram 3500.

   Program Sensor IDs to Vehicle
   Using the scan tool, select the option to write or program the captured sensor IDs to the vehicle's TPMS control module. Follow the scan tool prompts to complete the programming sequence. The tool will communicate with the vehicle's computer to store the new sensor locations.

   Exit Programming Mode
   Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Disconnect the scan tool from the diagnostic port. Wait 10 seconds before proceeding to the verification step.

   System Verification
   Turn the ignition to the ON position and observe the TPMS warning light. It should illuminate briefly during bulb check and then extinguish. If the light remains on or flashes, repeat the relearn procedure or check for faulty sensors.

Reassembly

Verification

• Start the vehicle and verify the TPMS warning light is off after the bulb check
• Drive the vehicle at speeds above 20 MPH for at least 2 minutes to allow the system to verify all sensor signals
• Use the scan tool to read live TPMS data and confirm all four sensors are reporting pressure readings to the control module
• Check that the tire pressure display (if equipped with individual tire pressure display) shows correct pressures for all four tires
• If the TPMS light illuminates after driving, recheck tire pressures and verify sensor battery life with the TPMS tool
