Preparation

    Locate transmission pan
    Position yourself under the vehicle and locate the transmission pan. On the 68RFE automatic, the pan is rectangular and located mid-chassis. On the G56 manual, the pan is on the bottom of the transmission case. Verify you have adequate clearance to work and position drain pan underneath.

    Install the new filter in the same orientation as the old one. For the 68RFE drop-in primary filter, lubricate the filter seal with clean ATF+4 and firmly seat it into the pump/valve body bore by hand until fully seated. For the bolt-in secondary (cooler return) filter, torque the retaining bolts to the OEM specification (approximately 40 in-lbs / 4.5 Nm) in a crisscross pattern — verify against factory service data before final tightening.

    Clean gasket surfaces
    Using a plastic gasket scraper, carefully remove all old gasket material from both the transmission pan and the transmission case mating surface. Take care not to gouge or scratch the aluminum surfaces. Clean both surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and wipe dry with lint-free shop rags. Inspect for damage or warping.

    For automatic transmission: start engine and allow to idle. With foot on brake, shift through all gear positions available on the selector (P-R-N-D), pausing 2-3 seconds in each position, then return to Park. Check dipstick with engine running and transmission at operating temperature. Add fluid in small increments until level reaches the 'HOT' range. For manual: verify fluid is at fill hole level with vehicle on level ground.
