Preparation

Procedure

On the 2007 Ram 3500, the tailgate latch and handle assembly are bolted to the tailgate sheet metal and there is no separate inner trim panel to remove. If an access cover or gasket is present over the latch area, remove any retaining fasteners and set it aside safely.

   Locate and access the actuator
   With the trim panel removed, identify the tailgate latch actuator assembly. It is a black or gray plastic housing mounted to the tailgate latch mechanism, typically on the driver's side of the tailgate near the latch. Use the work light to illuminate the area and trace the electrical connector leading to the actuator.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   If the tailgate is equipped with a power lock actuator, locate the electrical connector attached to it. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight off the actuator. Note that many 2007 Ram 3500 trucks use a purely mechanical tailgate latch with no electrical connector; if no connector is present, this actuator replacement may not apply to your vehicle. Do not pull on wires, only on the connector body. If desired, spray electrical contact cleaner into connector and allow to dry.

   Remove actuator mounting fasteners
   Using the 10mm socket, remove the bolts securing the actuator to the latch mechanism (typically 2-3 bolts). Note the orientation and position of the actuator before removal. Some actuators may use T30 Torx screws instead of bolts, so verify fastener type before proceeding.

   Disconnect actuator linkage
   The actuator connects to the latch mechanism via a plastic or metal linkage rod. Carefully disconnect this linkage by using a flathead screwdriver to pry the linkage clip off the actuator arm, or by pulling the linkage rod out of its retention socket. Pay close attention to how the linkage connects for proper reinstallation. Take a photo if needed for reference.

   Remove old actuator
   With fasteners and linkage disconnected, carefully maneuver the old actuator out through the access opening in the tailgate structure. It may require rotation or angling to clear the internal bracing of the tailgate.

   Install new actuator
   Position the new actuator in the same orientation as the old unit. Maneuver it into place through the tailgate access opening, ensuring it aligns with the mounting holes on the latch mechanism. Verify the actuator arm is positioned to accept the linkage rod.

   Reconnect actuator linkage
   Attach the linkage rod to the new actuator arm. Ensure the linkage clip fully seats and locks the rod in place. Gently tug on the linkage to confirm secure attachment. The linkage should move freely without binding when the actuator arm is manually moved.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Thread in the mounting bolts or screws by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all fasteners are started, tighten them firmly using the 10mm socket or T30 Torx driver. Tighten in a cross pattern if multiple fasteners are present. Since no torque specification is provided, tighten firmly but do not over-torque plastic components.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Push the electrical connector onto the new actuator until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked. Ensure no wires are pinched or routed where they could be damaged by moving parts.

    Test actuator operation
    If the tailgate has a power lock actuator tied to the vehicle's central locking, test it before closing up. Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to start). Use the power door lock switch to lock and unlock. Listen and feel for the tailgate actuator to engage and disengage. Manually verify the tailgate latch locks and unlocks properly. If the tailgate uses a manual latch, simply verify the latch and handle operate smoothly by hand. If operation is incorrect, recheck linkage connection and electrical connector seating.

    Reinstall trim panel
    Once actuator operation is verified, align the inner trim panel with the tailgate. Ensure any push clips are properly seated in the panel. Press the panel firmly into place around the perimeter until all clips engage. Install any T30 Torx screws that were removed initially. Ensure panel is flush and secure.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panel fasteners and clips are properly engaged and panel is flush with tailgate surface
2. Check that no tools or parts were left inside the tailgate structure before closing
3. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked

Verification

• Test power lock function from driver door switch - tailgate should lock and unlock audibly with all other doors
• Test with key fob remote if equipped - tailgate should respond to lock/unlock commands
• Manually open and close tailgate to verify latch mechanism operates smoothly without binding
• Verify tailgate latches securely and does not rattle when closed
• Inspect trim panel for proper fitment and ensure no gaps or loose clips remain
