Power Window Motor - Front

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front power window motor on a 2007 Ram 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
2. Roll window fully up before beginning disassembly if motor still functions
3. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
4. Prepare workspace for door panel storage to prevent damage

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door panel
   Remove the screw cover at the door pull/armrest and remove the two T30 Torx screws beneath it. Remove the small triangular trim piece at the front upper corner of the door panel. Use trim tools to carefully pry the door panel away from the door frame, starting at the bottom rear corner and working around the perimeter. Lift the panel up and off the door once all clips are released.

   Disconnect electrical connections
   Disconnect all electrical connectors from the back of the door panel including the power window switch, power lock switch, and any courtesy lights. Press the connector release tabs and pull straight out. Set the door panel aside in a safe location.

   Remove water barrier
   Carefully peel back the plastic water barrier sheet to access the window regulator and motor assembly. The barrier is adhered with butyl tape - work slowly to avoid tearing. Fold it back only as much as necessary to access the motor mounting area.

   Support the window glass
   If the window is down or partially down, support it in the up position using blocks of wood or masking tape securing the glass to the door frame. This prevents the glass from dropping when the motor is disconnected from the regulator.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the power window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Clean the connector with electrical contact cleaner if corrosion is present.

   Remove window motor mounting fasteners
   The window motor is attached to the regulator assembly with several 10mm bolts or rivets (typically three) depending on original equipment or previous service. Verify the actual count during disassembly. If bolts are present, remove them with a 10mm socket. If rivets are present, drill them out using a 3/16" drill bit, being careful not to damage the regulator plate.

   Separate motor from regulator
   Once fasteners are removed, carefully separate the motor from the regulator assembly. The motor gear may be engaged with the regulator gear - rotate the motor slightly while pulling to disengage. Remove the motor through the service hole in the door frame.

   Install new window motor
   Position the new window motor to the regulator assembly, aligning the gear teeth. Ensure the motor shaft engages properly with the regulator drive mechanism. Install the motor using either the OEM-style bolts or 3/16" rivets. If using bolts, torque to the value specified in the factory service manual for this fastener. If using rivets, ensure they are fully seated and secure.

   Reconnect electrical and test
   Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable and the window switch connector to test motor operation. Cycle the window up and down several times to verify smooth operation and proper motor function. Disconnect battery again before continuing reassembly.
10. 10

    Reinstall water barrier and door panel
    Press the water barrier sheet back into place, ensuring a complete seal around all edges. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel components. Align the door panel over the window sill and door frame, ensuring the lock and window control rods are properly positioned. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Install the T30 Torx screws at the armrest and install the screw cover. Install the triangular trim piece at the front upper corner.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated before driving to prevent rattles
2. Verify water barrier is completely sealed to prevent moisture intrusion into door panel
3. Replace any broken door panel clips with new ones from assortment

Verification

• Reconnect negative battery cable
• Test window operation through full up and down travel multiple times
• Verify window moves smoothly without binding or unusual noise
• Check that window seats properly at full up position against weatherstrip
• Verify auto-up and auto-down functions work properly if equipped
• Listen for any abnormal sounds from the door panel during window operation
