Window Motor and Regulator - Front

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front window motor and regulator assembly on a 2007 Ram 3500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
3. Lower the window approximately halfway for easier access to mounting bolts
4. Gather all tools and new parts before beginning disassembly

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove door panel trim components
   Remove the door handle trim bezel by pulling outward carefully. Remove the power window/lock switch module by prying gently from the front edge and disconnecting the electrical connector. Remove any additional trim pieces around the door pull handle.

   Remove door panel fasteners
   Remove all door panel screws (typically located in door pull area, behind switch module, and bottom edge of panel); note that many are Torx-head fasteners (commonly T20/T25) rather than Phillips. Use the trim removal tool to carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel by prying outward.

   Disconnect and remove door panel
   Lift the door panel upward to disengage it from the window sill. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors for speakers or courtesy lights. Disconnect the door handle cable by rotating the cable end and sliding it out of the handle mechanism. Remove the door panel and set aside on a protected surface.

   Remove water shield
   Carefully peel back the plastic water shield to access the window regulator mechanism. Take care not to tear the shield as it will need to be reattached. If using rivets, the shield may need to be partially removed; if using clips, you can fold it back.

   Secure the window glass
   Raise the window glass to the full up position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, taping across from the outside to prevent the glass from falling when disconnected from the regulator. Alternatively, have an assistant hold the glass in position.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Route the connector away from the work area.

   Disconnect glass from regulator
   Locate the two bolts securing the window glass to the regulator lift plate (accessible through access holes in the door frame). Use the correct socket (commonly 10mm, verify size) to remove these bolts. Carefully separate the glass from the regulator mechanism.

   Remove regulator mounting fasteners
   Locate all regulator mounting bolts and rivets. Remove the regulator mounting fasteners (verify head type and count against service documentation; these may be Torx bolts and/or factory rivets). If the regulator is secured with factory rivets, drill out the rivet heads with a bit matched to the rivet size (typically 3/16 inch to 1/4 inch), starting with a smaller pilot bit if needed. Take care not to enlarge the mounting holes in the door frame.

   Remove regulator and motor assembly
   Carefully maneuver the regulator and motor assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. You may need to angle and rotate the assembly to clear the door structure. Feed the motor through first, followed by the regulator arms and tracks.

    Install new regulator assembly
    Insert the new regulator and motor assembly into the door cavity by reversing the removal process. Feed the assembly through the access opening, motor first, then position the regulator arms and tracks into their proper locations. Align all mounting holes with the door frame.

    Secure regulator mounting points
    Install and tighten all regulator mounting fasteners (or replacement rivets/bolts) at the regulator mounting locations. If original rivets were drilled out, use appropriate replacement fasteners (either new rivets or bolts with washers). Ensure the regulator is firmly secured and does not move when manipulated.

    Reconnect glass to regulator
    Align the window glass with the regulator lift plate. Insert the mounting bolts through the glass mounting holes and thread into the lift plate. Tighten the 10mm bolts securely, ensuring the glass is properly seated and aligned in the regulator mechanism.

    Test window operation
    Remove the tape securing the window glass. Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable and test window operation through several full up and down cycles. Verify smooth operation without binding or unusual noises. Disconnect battery cable again before proceeding.

    Reinstall water shield and door panel
    Reposition the plastic water shield and press firmly to reseal. Reconnect the door handle cable to the latch mechanism. Reconnect all electrical connectors for switches, speakers, and lights. Position the door panel and engage it over the window sill, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Reinstall all Phillips screws and trim pieces.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify the water shield is properly sealed to prevent moisture intrusion
3. Replace any broken door panel clips to ensure secure panel attachment
4. Test all door functions including locks, handles, and windows before completing the job

Verification

• Reconnect the negative battery cable
• Test the window through multiple complete up and down cycles from both the driver and individual door switches
• Verify the window moves smoothly without hesitation, binding, or unusual noises
• Check that the window seals properly at the top position and auto-reverse functions work if equipped
• Ensure the door panel is secure with no rattles or loose clips
• Verify all door functions including locks and interior lights operate correctly
