Window Motor and Regulator - Rear

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear window motor and regulator assembly on a 2007 Ram 3500 Mega Cab, including door panel removal and window alignment.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes
3. Roll rear window to approximately mid-position before disconnecting battery if possible
4. Gather all tools and replacement parts
5. Protect interior surfaces with towels or drop cloth to catch debris

Procedure

   Remove door panel trim components
   Remove the interior door handle bezel by prying gently with a trim tool. Remove the window switch panel by prying up from the rear edge and disconnecting the electrical connector. Remove the door pull cup by removing the Phillips screw at the bottom, then prying the cup forward and up. Remove any other trim pieces or covers from the door panel. Verify against manufacturer documentation for the specific cab configuration (Quad Cab vs Mega Cab) of the 2007 Ram 3500; use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent.

   Remove door panel fasteners
   Locate and remove all door panel fasteners. Locate and remove the door panel screws at the bottom edge of the door panel (typically Torx or hex-head; verify the exact type and count for this door panel). Remove the screw behind the door pull cup location. Note the location of all fasteners for reinstallation.

   Detach and remove door panel
   Using a door panel trim tool, carefully release the plastic retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Start at the bottom corners and work your way around. Once all clips are released, lift the door panel up and off the door to disengage it from the window sill. Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors and set the door panel aside in a safe location.

   Remove moisture barrier
   Carefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier to access the window regulator and motor assembly. Try to preserve the barrier and its adhesive for reinstallation. If the barrier tears, you will need to reseal it with appropriate adhesive or tape during reassembly.

   Secure window glass
   Raise the window glass to near the top of its travel. Use wide masking tape or window tape to secure the glass to the door frame to prevent it from falling when disconnected from the regulator. Apply tape from the outside of the window across the glass and onto the door frame.

   Disconnect window motor electrical connector
   Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector from the motor. Note the routing of the wiring for reinstallation.

   Disconnect window from regulator
   Locate the fasteners that secure the window glass to the regulator lift plate (verify the exact size and count for this window; typically two bolts). These are accessed through holes in the door inner structure. These are accessed through holes in the door inner structure. Remove these fasteners and carefully separate the glass from the regulator mechanism. The window should now be supported only by the tape applied earlier.

   Remove regulator mounting fasteners
   Locate all regulator mounting bolts or rivets. Factory regulators are typically secured with several bolts or rivets; verify the exact count, size, and type for this regulator before removal. If rivets are used, drill them out using a 1/8 inch drill bit, being careful not to damage the door structure. If bolts are used, remove them with a 10mm socket. Some regulators may have a combination of bolts and rivets.

   Remove regulator assembly
   Carefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the large access hole in the door inner panel. You may need to rotate and angle the assembly to clear the door structure. Feed the motor wiring through as you remove the assembly. Be careful not to catch the regulator cables or arms on door components.

    Install new regulator assembly
    Position the new window regulator and motor assembly inside the door, routing it through the access hole. Orient the assembly to match the original position, ensuring the lift plate is positioned to align with the window glass attachment points. Thread the motor electrical connector through to the interior side.

    Secure regulator to door
    Align the regulator mounting holes with the holes in the door structure. If the original regulator used bolts, install the new regulator with 10mm bolts and tighten securely. If the original used rivets, either install the new regulator with 1/8 inch pop rivets using a rivet gun, or use appropriate 10mm bolts with washers. Ensure all mounting points are secured before proceeding.

    Reconnect window to regulator
    Remove the tape holding the window glass. Carefully lower the glass until the mounting holes in the glass bracket align with the regulator lift plate holes. Insert the mounting bolts and hand-tighten the 10mm fasteners, but do not fully tighten yet to allow for adjustment.

    Connect motor and test operation
    Reconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable. Test window operation by using the window switch to raise and lower the window through its full range of travel. Observe for smooth operation, proper alignment in the window channel, and any binding or unusual noises. Adjust the window glass attachment bolts as needed for proper alignment.

    Finalize window alignment
    With the window operating smoothly, tighten the two 10mm window-to-regulator mounting bolts securely. Cycle the window several more times to verify proper operation and alignment. The window should seal properly at the top and move smoothly without binding.

    Reinstall moisture barrier and door panel
    Disconnect the negative battery cable again. Reposition the moisture barrier over the door opening, ensuring it seals completely. Use new adhesive or tape if the original adhesive is compromised. Reconnect any electrical connectors to the door panel components. Position the door panel onto the door, engaging the top edge over the window sill first, then press the panel firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Reinstall all door panel screws using the T-30 Torx driver. Reinstall the door pull cup, window switch panel, and door handle bezel.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated before installing screws
2. Verify all electrical connectors are properly engaged before final testing
3. Make sure the moisture barrier is completely sealed to prevent water intrusion

Verification

• Reconnect the negative battery cable
• Test window operation from both front and rear switches through multiple complete cycles
• Verify window seals properly at the top of travel with no gaps
• Check that window glass is aligned properly in the door frame and does not bind
• Listen for any unusual noises during operation
• Verify all door panel trim pieces are secure and properly aligned
• Test door latch operation to ensure door panel installation did not interfere with mechanisms
