Wiper Switch

Remove and replace the windshield wiper switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2007 Ram 3500 with 5.9L Cummins diesel engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure steering wheel is centered and front wheels are pointed straight ahead
3. Mark the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel with tape for reference
4. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
5. Adjust steering column to lowest tilt position for easier access

Procedure

   Remove lower steering column covers
   Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Gently pull the lower cover away from the column. The upper cover may have clips that need to be released with a trim tool. Carefully separate the upper and lower covers and set aside.

   Access multifunction switch area
   With the column covers removed, locate the multifunction switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Identify the wiring harness connector leading to the switch. Note the routing of the wiring for reinstallation.

   Disconnect wiring harness
   Locate the electrical connector for the multifunction switch. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull it straight out from the switch. If connector is difficult to access, you may need to trace it down the column to a more accessible location. Some connectors are located below the dash panel.

   Remove multifunction switch mounting fasteners
   Locate the screws that secure the multifunction switch to the steering column housing (verify screw type and count against the factory service manual for this vehicle). These are usually positioned on the left side of the column. Remove the screws completely and retain them for reinstallation.

   Remove multifunction switch assembly
   Carefully remove the multifunction switch assembly from its mounting pod on the steering column. The switch may have a tab or slot that engages with the column housing, so gentle wiggling may be necessary. Pull the wiring harness through any routing clips as you remove the switch. Take care not to damage the clockspring or other components.

   Prepare new multifunction switch
   Unpack the new multifunction switch and verify it matches the old unit. Check that all mounting tabs and electrical connector pins are in good condition. Route the wiring harness through the same path as the original switch, using the old switch as reference.

   Install new multifunction switch
   Align the new multifunction switch with the mounting points on the steering column. Ensure any alignment tabs or slots engage properly with the column housing. Slide the switch into position until it seats flush against the column. Install the two Torx mounting screws and tighten securely by hand, ensuring the switch is properly aligned and does not bind.

   Reconnect wiring harness
   Route the wiring harness through any factory clips to maintain proper wire management. Connect the electrical connector to the multifunction switch, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Gently tug on the connector to confirm it is locked.

   Reinstall steering column covers
   Position the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring all internal clips align properly. Snap the lower cover into place, making sure all edges are flush. Install the two Phillips screws at the bottom of the lower cover and tighten securely. Verify covers are properly seated and do not interfere with switch operation.

    Reconnect battery and test
    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. Test all wiper functions: intermittent speeds, low speed, high speed, mist function, and washer operation. Verify turn signals and hazard lights also function properly as these are typically integrated into the same switch assembly. Cycle through all functions multiple times to ensure reliable operation.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are securely fastened and aligned properly
2. Verify no wiring is pinched between column covers or other components
3. Confirm steering wheel position marker is still at 12 o'clock if it was not disturbed during repair

Verification

• Test all wiper speeds (intermittent, low, high) and verify smooth operation
• Test windshield washer function and verify pump activates when switch is pulled
• Test mist function by pushing switch forward briefly
• Verify turn signals operate correctly in both directions
• Test hazard light function
• Ensure wiper switch returns to correct position after each operation
• Check that no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster
• Verify steering column covers are secure and do not rattle
