Parts
- Audio amplifier assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes
- Turn off all audio and entertainment systems
- Ensure ignition is off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from vehicle
- Gather all necessary tools and have replacement amplifier ready
Procedure
- 1Access rear cargo area or seat locationOpen the rear cargo door or rear passenger door depending on amplifier location. For EDV 500 cargo configuration, the amplifier is typically located behind the driver-side rear trim panel or under the driver-side cargo floor panel. Remove any cargo mats or floor coverings to access the mounting area.
- 2Remove trim panel or access coverUsing the panel removal tool, carefully pry out the trim clips securing the side trim panel or floor access cover. Start at the bottom edge and work upward, releasing each clip without breaking them. Set aside the trim panel in a safe location. If accessing from under a seat, slide the seat fully forward and remove the seat base mounting bolts using a T25 Torx driver.
- 3Locate the amplifier assemblyIdentify the amplifier unit, which is typically a rectangular metal box approximately 8x10 inches with multiple wire harness connectors. Use the flashlight to inspect all mounting points and connections. The amplifier will be secured with either Torx screws or 10mm bolts to a mounting bracket.
- 4Disconnect main power connectorLocate the main power connector on the amplifier, typically a large multi-pin connector with a red or yellow safety latch. Depress the safety latch and firmly pull the connector straight out from the amplifier body. Do not twist or rock the connector excessively.⚠Verify 12V battery is disconnected before removing power connectors to prevent potential shorts
- 5Disconnect audio signal connectorsRemove all remaining connectors from the amplifier. These typically include 2-4 smaller connectors for audio input signals, speaker outputs, and control/communication lines. Press the release tabs on each connector and pull straight out. Label or photograph each connection point for reassembly reference.
- 6Remove amplifier ground connectionLocate the ground wire, typically a black wire with a ring terminal bolted to the amplifier chassis or mounting bracket. Use the 10mm socket to remove the ground bolt. Keep the bolt and any washers with the ground wire for reattachment.
- 7Remove amplifier mounting fastenersUsing the appropriate Torx driver (typically T20 or T25), remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the amplifier to its bracket. There are typically 4 mounting points. Support the amplifier while removing the final fastener to prevent it from falling.
- 8Extract amplifier from vehicleCarefully slide the amplifier out of its mounting location. The unit may be oriented in a tight space, so angle it as needed to clear any obstructions. Inspect the mounting bracket and surrounding area for any signs of water intrusion or damage.
- 9Prepare new amplifier for installationRemove the new amplifier from its packaging and inspect for any shipping damage. If the mounting bracket is attached to the old amplifier, transfer it to the new unit using the appropriate fasteners. Ensure all connector ports on the new amplifier are free of debris or protective plugs.
- 10Install new amplifierPosition the new amplifier into the mounting location, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Install all mounting fasteners and tighten in a cross pattern to ensure even pressure. Hand-tighten first, then snug down with the Torx driver. Do not overtighten as this can damage the amplifier housing.
- 11Reconnect ground connectionAttach the ground wire ring terminal to the amplifier or mounting bracket ground point. Install the 10mm bolt and tighten securely. Ensure the ground connection point is clean and free of paint or corrosion for proper electrical contact.
- 12Reconnect all audio and signal connectorsReconnect all audio input, speaker output, and control connectors to the new amplifier, referencing your photos or labels. Push each connector firmly until you hear or feel a positive click. Verify each connector is fully seated and the locking tab is engaged.
- 13Reconnect main power connectorAttach the main power connector to the amplifier, ensuring proper alignment of the pins. Push firmly until the connector is fully seated and the safety latch engages with an audible click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked in place.
- 14Reinstall trim panels and coversReplace the side trim panel or access cover, aligning all clip locations. Press firmly along all edges to engage the clips. If replacing seat mounting bolts, reinstall them in a cross pattern. Reinstall any floor coverings or cargo mats that were removed.
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are fully seated and all clips are engaged before testing
- Verify no tools or parts are left in the vehicle interior or cargo area
- Reconnect 12V battery negative terminal and ensure it is tight
Verification
- Reconnect 12V battery and turn ignition to ON position without starting
- Power on the infotainment system and check for amplifier fault codes or warning messages
- Test all audio sources including radio, Bluetooth, and USB inputs
- Verify audio output from all speakers at various volume levels
- Check for any distortion, popping, or cutting out during audio playback
- Test premium audio features if equipped such as surround sound modes
- Verify proper operation of steering wheel audio controls and volume adjustment
- Inspect all reinstalled trim panels for proper fit and finish with no rattles
