Parts
- Rear backup camera assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Camera seal/gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel clips (assorted) × 1 — Rivian replacement clip kit
- Rear door panel retainers × 5 — Have spares available
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake.
- Open rear cargo doors fully and secure them in open position.
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery located in front driver's side compartment.
- Wait 2 minutes for vehicle systems to fully power down.
- Clean the area around the camera and rear door panel to prevent contamination during disassembly.
- Take photos of camera positioning and wiring routing for reference during reassembly.
Procedure
- 1Remove rear door interior trim panelUsing the trim clip removal tool, carefully pry out the lower edge of the rear door trim panel starting at the bottom corner. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing each clip. There are approximately 12-15 clips securing the panel. Once clips are released, lift the panel upward to disengage the upper retaining tabs, then pull away from door.
- 2Disconnect door panel electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connectors behind the door panel for puddle lights or other door-mounted accessories if equipped. Press the connector release tabs and carefully disconnect each connector. Set the door panel aside in a safe location where it won't be damaged.
- 3Remove moisture barrier accessPeel back the moisture barrier film only in the area necessary to access the camera mounting location. Use painter's tape to secure the barrier out of the way. Be careful not to tear the barrier as it provides critical water protection.
- 4Access camera from exteriorFrom outside the vehicle, locate the backup camera housing on the rear door handle area or upper door panel. The camera is typically mounted above or integrated with the door handle assembly on the EDV 500.
- 5Remove camera retaining fastenersUsing the T25 Torx driver, remove the camera mounting screws (typically 2-3 screws). If the camera is integrated into a trim piece, remove the surrounding trim first using the T20 Torx driver and 8mm socket as needed. Keep all hardware organized.
- 6Disconnect camera electrical connectorFrom inside the door cavity, reach behind the camera location and locate the electrical connector. Press the connector lock tab (usually orange or gray) and carefully pull the connector straight out from the camera module. Note the connector orientation and any waterproof seals.
- 7Remove camera assemblyCarefully pull the camera assembly out from the exterior of the door. Note how the camera is oriented and sealed. Remove and inspect the rubber gasket/seal around the camera body. If damaged or compressed, replace with new seal.
- 8Prepare new camera assemblyUnpack the new camera and verify it matches the original unit. Install the new gasket/seal onto the camera body, ensuring it seats properly in the groove. Clean the mounting surface on the door with a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt or old sealant residue.
- 9Install new camera assemblyFrom the exterior, carefully insert the new camera assembly into the mounting location. Ensure the gasket seats properly against the door surface and the camera lens is oriented correctly (typically with the connector pointing down). Align the mounting holes.
- 10Connect camera electrical connectorFrom inside the door cavity, route the camera connector if necessary and plug it into the vehicle harness. You should hear or feel a positive click when the connector locks. Gently tug to verify secure connection.
- 11Secure camera mounting fastenersInstall and tighten the camera mounting screws using the T25 Torx driver. Tighten evenly to compress the gasket seal without over-tightening. If part of a trim assembly, reinstall the surrounding trim pieces with T20 fasteners and 8mm bolts.
- 12Test camera functionBefore reassembling panels, reconnect the 12V battery and turn the vehicle to accessory mode. Shift into reverse and verify the backup camera displays on the center screen. Check for clear image, proper orientation, and no warning lights. If equipped with guidelines, verify they display correctly.
- 13Reinstall moisture barrierCarefully press the moisture barrier back into position, ensuring it adheres completely around the edges. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles that could interfere with panel installation.
- 14Reinstall door trim panelReconnect any electrical connectors to the door panel. Position the panel and engage the upper retaining tabs first, then press firmly around the perimeter to seat all clips. Verify the panel is flush and all clips are engaged by checking for gaps.
Reassembly
- Replace any broken trim clips with new ones from the replacement clip kit.
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked to prevent intermittent issues.
- Verify the moisture barrier is properly sealed to prevent water intrusion into the door cavity.
- Check that door panel gaps are even all around and the panel does not rattle when tapped.
Verification
- Start the vehicle and shift into reverse multiple times to verify consistent camera operation.
- Check that the camera image is clear, properly focused, and correctly oriented.
- Verify parking guidelines appear on screen if equipped and align properly with vehicle position.
- Confirm no warning lights or camera system faults appear on the instrument cluster.
- Test in different lighting conditions if possible to ensure proper image quality.
- If camera calibration is required, schedule service with Rivian or authorized technician with diagnostic access.
- Verify all door panel fasteners and trim pieces are secure with no rattles or loose components.
