This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the negative battery cable on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery vehicle, including high-voltage system isolation and proper reconnection procedures.
Warnings
⚠️This vehicle contains high-voltage components exceeding 400V DC. Failure to follow proper lockout/tagout procedures can result in severe injury or death from electrocution.
⚠️Only technicians trained in electric vehicle high-voltage systems should perform this repair. Verify certification before proceeding.
⚠️Always verify the high-voltage system is de-energized using a multimeter before touching any cables or connections.
⚠The negative battery cable carries high current. Ensure all jewelry, watches, and conductive items are removed before working.
⚠Disconnecting the 12V battery will erase adaptive memory. Vehicle may exhibit different behavior until systems relearn.

Parts
- Negative battery cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Battery terminal hardware kit × 1 — Use OEM specification
- High-voltage service plug lock × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place safety cones and warning signs around vehicle to prevent unauthorized access during service
- Ensure vehicle has been powered off for at least 5 minutes to allow capacitors to discharge
- Document any stored diagnostic trouble codes using Rivian diagnostic software
- Photograph battery cable routing and connections for reinstallation reference
- Put on high-voltage insulated gloves and safety equipment
Procedure
- 1Disable high-voltage systemAccess the high-voltage service disconnect located in the front storage compartment. Remove the service disconnect cover and pull the service disconnect plug to isolate the high-voltage battery pack. Install the service plug lock to prevent accidental reconnection. Attach lockout/tagout tag with technician name and date.⚠️Never skip this step. The high-voltage system must be disabled before proceeding.
- 2Wait for capacitor dischargeWait a minimum of 5 minutes after removing the service disconnect to allow high-voltage capacitors to fully discharge. Do not proceed until the full waiting period has elapsed.
- 3Verify system de-energizationUsing a high-voltage rated multimeter, verify that no voltage is present between the high-voltage positive and negative bus bars. Voltage reading should be 0V DC. If any voltage is detected, wait an additional 5 minutes and retest. Do not proceed if voltage is present.⚠️This verification step is mandatory. Never assume the system is safe without measuring.
- 4Disconnect 12V auxiliary batteryLocate the 12V auxiliary battery in the front storage compartment. Disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive terminal. Secure cables away from battery posts to prevent accidental reconnection.
- 5Remove underbody panelsRemove the underbody protective panels beneath the battery pack area to access the negative battery cable routing. Remove all fasteners and carefully lower panels, noting the location of any clips or mounting hardware.
- 6Locate negative battery cableIdentify the negative battery cable running from the high-voltage battery pack to the vehicle chassis ground point. Trace the entire cable path and identify all connection points, mounting brackets, and routing clips.
- 7Disconnect cable at battery packRemove the fasteners securing the negative cable terminal to the battery pack negative terminal. Use a socket wrench to loosen the connection. If corrosion is present, use a battery terminal puller to avoid damaging components. Do not twist or pry against the battery pack housing.
- 8Disconnect cable at chassis groundLocate the negative cable chassis ground connection point. Remove the mounting bolt securing the cable terminal to the chassis ground stud. Clean the ground point with a wire brush to ensure good electrical contact during reinstallation.
- 9Remove cable routing hardwareRelease all cable routing clips and remove mounting brackets along the cable path. Note the exact routing for reinstallation to prevent interference with other components or moving parts.
- 10Remove old negative cableCarefully remove the negative battery cable from the vehicle, ensuring it does not catch on any components. Inspect the cable pathway for any damage or wear that may have contributed to cable failure.
- 11Inspect connections and terminalsInspect both the battery pack terminal and chassis ground stud for corrosion, damage, or signs of overheating. Clean all contact surfaces with a wire brush. If any damage is found, repair or replace affected components before installing the new cable.
- 12Install new negative cableRoute the new negative battery cable along the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact sharp edges, moving parts, or heat sources. Install all routing clips and mounting brackets to secure the cable in its proper position.
- 13Connect cable at chassis groundApply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the chassis ground stud. Install the cable terminal onto the ground stud and secure with the mounting bolt. Torque to manufacturer specification (consult service manual for exact value).
- 14Connect cable at battery packApply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the battery pack negative terminal. Install the cable terminal onto the battery pack terminal and secure with fasteners. Torque to manufacturer specification (consult service manual for exact value). Ensure connection is tight and secure.
- 15Reinstall underbody panelsReinstall all underbody protective panels, ensuring all fasteners and clips are properly secured. Verify panels are seated correctly and do not interfere with the cable routing.
- 16Reconnect 12V auxiliary batteryReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery, connecting the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal. Torque terminals to specification.
- 17Restore high-voltage systemRemove the service plug lock and reinstall the high-voltage service disconnect plug. Ensure it is fully seated and locked in place. Reinstall the service disconnect cover. Remove lockout/tagout tag.
Reassembly
- Double-check all electrical connections are tight and properly torqued
- Verify negative cable routing does not interfere with any moving parts or heat sources
- Ensure all underbody panels are reinstalled and secured properly
- Remove all tools and equipment from vehicle and work area
Verification
- Using Rivian diagnostic software, verify no high-voltage isolation faults are present
- Check for proper 12V system voltage (approximately 12.6-13.2V with vehicle off)
- Power on the vehicle and verify all systems initialize without errors
- Verify the vehicle can enter ready-to-drive mode
- Check that all warning lights extinguish after startup
- Perform a low-speed test drive to verify proper vehicle operation
- Recheck all diagnostic trouble codes and verify none are related to high-voltage system or grounding issues
- Visually inspect cable connections after test drive for any signs of looseness or overheating
