This procedure removes and replaces the clock spring assembly in the steering column to restore airbag and steering wheel control functionality.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the 12V battery and wait at least 15 minutes before beginning work to allow the airbag system capacitors to discharge. Failure to do so may result in unintended airbag deployment and serious injury.
⚠️Never rotate the steering wheel or front wheels with the clock spring disconnected or removed, as this will damage the new clock spring.
⚠This vehicle has supplemental restraint systems (SRS). Improper handling can cause unintended airbag deployment or system faults requiring dealer reprogramming.
⚠The clock spring must be centered before installation. An improperly centered clock spring will fail prematurely or prevent full steering range.

Parts
- Clock spring assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Steering column trim clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position and mark steering wheel position
- Disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery located in the front compartment
- Wait minimum 15 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Remove any personal items that could create static discharge
Procedure
- 1Remove driver airbag moduleLocate and remove the Torx screws on both sides of the steering wheel (typically accessed from behind). Carefully pull the airbag module straight back from the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag electrical connector by pressing the locking tab and separating. Place airbag module face-up in a safe location away from the work area.
- 2Disconnect steering wheel controlsIdentify and disconnect all electrical connectors at the steering wheel including horn, paddle shifters (if equipped), and steering wheel control buttons. Note connector positions and routing for reassembly.
- 3Remove steering wheelRemove the steering wheel center retaining nut or bolt. Mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering shaft for proper alignment during reassembly. Use a steering wheel puller to carefully remove the steering wheel from the shaft. Do not use excessive force or impact tools.
- 4Lock steering columnInstall a steering column locking pin or device to prevent the steering shaft from rotating. This is critical to maintain clock spring alignment and prevent damage. Verify the shaft cannot rotate before proceeding.
- 5Remove steering column coversRemove the upper and lower steering column trim covers by releasing the retaining clips and removing any Torx screws securing the covers. Carefully separate the covers and set aside. Be gentle with trim clips to avoid breakage.
- 6Disconnect clock spring connectorsLocate the clock spring electrical connectors at the base of the clock spring assembly. These typically include the airbag circuit and steering wheel control circuits. Press the locking tabs and carefully disconnect each connector. Note the connector colors and positions for reassembly.
- 7Remove clock spring mounting fastenersRemove the screws or fasteners securing the clock spring to the steering column housing. These are typically Torx screws (T20 or T25) located around the perimeter of the clock spring. Keep all fasteners organized for reassembly.
- 8Remove old clock springCarefully slide the clock spring assembly off the steering column shaft. Note the orientation and position of any alignment marks or tabs. Inspect the steering column shaft for any damage or debris before installing the new clock spring.
- 9Verify new clock spring centeringConfirm the new clock spring is in the centered position. Most new clock springs come with a locking pin or tape holding them in the centered position. Do NOT remove this locking device until after installation. If the clock spring is not pre-centered, consult service information for proper centering procedure specific to this vehicle.
- 10Install new clock springAlign the clock spring with the steering column shaft and any alignment tabs or pins. Slide the clock spring onto the shaft ensuring proper seating against the column housing. Verify alignment marks match the original installation position.
- 11Secure clock spring and connect wiringInstall and tighten the clock spring mounting screws in a cross-pattern to ensure even seating. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the clock spring, ensuring each connector clicks fully into place and locking tabs engage. Remove any centering pins or tape from the new clock spring.
- 12Reinstall steering column coversPosition the lower and upper steering column covers and secure with trim clips and Torx screws. Ensure all clips are fully engaged and covers fit properly without gaps.
- 13Reinstall steering wheelRemove the steering column locking device. Align the steering wheel with the alignment marks made during removal and install onto the steering shaft. Install and tighten the steering wheel retaining nut or bolt. Reconnect all steering wheel electrical connectors including horn, controls, and paddles.
- 14Reinstall airbag moduleConnect the airbag electrical connector ensuring it clicks and locks fully. Carefully position the airbag module into the steering wheel, aligning all mounting points. Install the side Torx screws and tighten securely.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Ensure steering wheel is properly aligned with front wheels in straight-ahead position
- Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery
- Clear any diagnostic trouble codes using appropriate scan tool if available
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify the airbag warning light performs its normal self-check (illuminates briefly then extinguishes)
- Rotate steering wheel fully lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
- Test all steering wheel controls including horn, turn signals, and any paddle shifters or buttons
- If airbag light remains illuminated, scan for diagnostic codes as system may require dealer reprogramming
- Perform a test drive to verify full steering function and confirm no warning lights remain illuminated
