Remove and replace the dimmer switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2022 Rivian EDV 500.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect 12V battery and wait at least 5 minutes before working near airbag components to prevent accidental deployment.
⚠The Rivian EDV 500 has high-voltage systems. Do not attempt to access HV components. This procedure only involves low-voltage systems.
⚠Ensure vehicle is in PARK with parking brake engaged and wheel chocks in place.
ℹ️Document electrical connector positions and orientations with photos before disconnection to aid reassembly.

Parts
- Dimmer/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Ensure vehicle is powered off completely
- Open driver's door and lower driver's window for access
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal
- Wait minimum 5 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Position driver's seat to rearmost position for working clearance
- Adjust steering column to lowest and most extended position
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversLocate the lower steering column shroud below the steering wheel. Use trim panel removal tools to carefully release the clips securing the lower cover. There are typically 2-3 clips on each side. Once clips are released, pull the lower cover away from the column and set aside.
- 2Remove upper steering column coversWith the lower cover removed, access the fasteners securing the upper steering column cover. Remove the Torx screws (typically T20 or T25) that secure the upper shroud halves together. Separate the upper cover halves and carefully lift them away from the steering column, being mindful of any wiring harnesses that may route through or near the covers.
- 3Locate dimmer switch assemblyWith column covers removed, identify the multifunction switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. The dimmer switch is integrated into this assembly and controls headlight dimming, turn signals, and possibly wipers. Inspect the mounting bracket and electrical connectors. Take photos for reference.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the electrical connector(s) on the multifunction switch assembly. Press the locking tab(s) and carefully disconnect each connector. There may be 1-3 connectors depending on switch configuration. Support the connector housing while releasing to prevent damage to the column-side connectors. If connectors are difficult to access, gently move aside any wire harness clips or routing brackets.
- 5Remove switch mounting fastenersLocate the mounting screws or bolts securing the multifunction switch assembly to the steering column. These are typically T25 or T30 Torx screws. Remove all mounting fasteners while supporting the switch assembly. Note the exact position and orientation of any alignment features or indexing tabs on the switch mounting surface.
- 6Remove dimmer switch assemblyWith fasteners removed, carefully slide the multifunction switch assembly away from the steering column. Pay attention to how the switch actuator interfaces with the column mechanism. Note any springs, detents, or alignment pins that may be present. Set the old switch aside in a clean area.
- 7Inspect mounting areaWith the switch removed, inspect the steering column mounting surface for any damage, corrosion, or debris. Clean the mounting surface with a clean cloth. Verify that any alignment pins or indexing features on the column are intact and not damaged.
- 8Install new dimmer switch assemblyPosition the new multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning any indexing tabs or pins with their corresponding features on the column. Ensure the switch actuator properly engages with the column mechanism. Verify correct orientation by comparing with photos taken during disassembly.
- 9Install and secure mounting fastenersInstall the mounting screws for the multifunction switch assembly. Start all fasteners by hand to ensure proper threading and alignment. Tighten the Torx fasteners evenly in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Do not overtighten as the mounting bracket may be aluminum or plastic.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect each electrical connector to the new multifunction switch assembly. Ensure each connector clicks firmly into place and the locking tab fully engages. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure connection. Verify no pins are bent or misaligned.
- 11Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover halves around the column, routing any wiring harnesses properly. Install and tighten the Torx screws securing the upper cover halves. Position the lower steering column cover and firmly press it into place until all clips engage with audible clicks.
- 12Reconnect 12V battery and testReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Power on the vehicle and test all dimmer switch functions including high beam, low beam, flash-to-pass, turn signals (if integrated), and any other functions controlled by the multifunction switch. Verify proper operation in all positions and modes.
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are fully seated with clips engaged
- Verify no gaps exist between upper and lower column covers
- Return steering column and driver's seat to normal operating positions
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Turn vehicle power on and verify instrument cluster displays no warning lights related to lighting system
- Test headlight dimmer function by toggling between high and low beams multiple times
- Verify flash-to-pass function operates correctly
- Test turn signal operation in both left and right directions (if integrated into switch)
- Confirm all other multifunction switch operations work properly
- Verify steering column covers are secure and do not rattle or interfere with steering operation
- Take a short test drive to confirm all lighting functions operate normally during vehicle operation
